Traveler Reviews
Honestly the highlight of our Kathmandu trip. We started at a little local market picking out spices and vegetables, which I'd never have found on my own, then spent a couple of hours folding momos and cooking a proper dal bhat. Our chef was patient and funny, and sitting down to eat what we'd made with masala tea was the perfect ending. Brilliant value at twenty dollars.
I came expecting a demonstration and instead got genuinely hands-on cooking. Learning the spice ratios for the lentil dal was the part I'll actually use at home. The three hours flew by and the food was better than most restaurants we tried in Thamel. Chef happily adjusted everything to vegetarian for me without any fuss. Highly recommend to anyone curious about real Nepali home food.
A lovely and delicious experience overall. The momo folding was so much fun and the tasting at the end left us completely full. My only small note is that the market walk goes through very crowded, uneven Thamel streets and it was a bit chaotic dodging scooters. Not a dealbreaker at all, just wear proper shoes and stay alert. Would still recommend it warmly.
Did this on our first evening and it set the tone for the whole trip. Great way to understand Nepali culture through the food rather than just eating out. We cooked three different curries plus momos and the chef explained the story behind each dish. Everything was fresh from the market that afternoon. My partner still talks about the masala tea. Fantastic little experience.
Such a warm, welcoming afternoon. As someone who cooks a lot at home I appreciated how much technique they shared, not just recipes. The dumpling pleating took me a few tries but the chef kept correcting me kindly until mine looked decent. Loved that we picked our own ingredients first. Left with a full stomach and written recipes to try back home. Worth every rupee.
Booked the hotel pickup option and it made everything easy since we were staying a little outside the Thamel core. The class itself was intimate and relaxed, no rushing. We made dal bhat, vegetable curry and steamed momos, then feasted on all of it. Our two teenagers were fully engaged the whole time, which almost never happens. A genuinely memorable family evening in Kathmandu.
Really enjoyable and great value, and the chef was lovely and knowledgeable. Just a heads-up that our session ran on the busier side so it felt slightly less private than I'd pictured, though everyone still got hands-on time. The food more than made up for it, the momos were the best I had in Nepal. Come hungry because the portions at the tasting are generous.
As an Italian I take cooking seriously and this did not disappoint. The market tour was fascinating, seeing which spices define Nepali cooking, and the chef treated it like a real lesson rather than a tourist show. We adjusted the chili to suit us and the result was perfectly balanced. Three relaxed hours, wonderful company, and a plate of food we were genuinely proud of.
