Ella to Sigiriya can be done via Kandy, which is the busy road, or via Mahiyanganaya, which is the quiet one. This transfer takes the eastern route: down the Uva escarpment, out across the dry-zone plain, and north to the cultural triangle.
The Vedda are Sri Lanka's indigenous people, present on the island long before the Sinhalese arrival the chronicles date to the fifth century BC. A few communities remain, mostly around Dambana near Mahiyanganaya, and a visit involves meeting members of the community, seeing the hunting and gathering techniques they still teach, and hearing their own account of a history usually told about them rather than by them.
It is worth being honest about what this is. These visits are a livelihood and they are performed to a degree. That does not make them worthless — the community controls the presentation and the money stays local — but anyone selling it as an encounter with people untouched by the modern world is not telling you the truth.
Mahiyanganaya itself has one of the oldest stupas in Sri Lanka, said to enshrine hair relics and to mark the site of the Buddha's first visit to the island.
You reach Sigiriya in the afternoon, in time to settle before a dawn climb.

January to March for the clearest Ella Gap views. June to September is dry but hazy from the Uva wind; October to December is wet. Do everything before nine in the morning. The Gap view is clearer in the morning in every month, Little Adam's Peak has a queue by nine, and the Nine Arch Bridge has hundreds of people on it by ten.

Roughly June to September, peaking in August, when the shrinking reservoir exposes fresh grass and several hundred elephants converge.
