Full description

Kandy to Trincomalee is a long drive with the two best sites in the country sitting almost exactly on the route, which makes doing it as a plain transfer a genuine waste.

Sigiriya comes first and early. The fifth-century citadel on the granite plug is 1,200 steps up past the mirror wall frescoes and the lion's paws, with symmetrical water gardens laid out below that still work after fifteen hundred years. Climbing it in the morning is the difference between a good hour and a hard one.

Dambulla is fifteen minutes away: five caves cut under a granite overhang and painted floor to ceiling for two thousand years, holding around 150 Buddha images. Cool and dark, which by mid-morning is welcome.

From Dambulla it is about two and a half hours northeast to Trincomalee, and the landscape flattens and dries out as you go. Trincomalee has one of the finest natural deep-water harbours in the world, the Koneswaram temple on a cliff above it, and the beaches at Uppuveli and Nilaveli — which are on the dry side of the island from May to September, exactly when the south coast is unswimmable.

This excursion is a great way if you want to go to the Eadt Coast from Kandy. Sura, my driver, is very friendly and so patient. We visited an amazing temple (SLR1000) drove to the Dambulla Caves (SLR33000), Lion Rock (USD32), had a great lunch at the lake (village tour SLR5000) and then the best part, took a jeep (USD60) to go to Minneriya national park (USD23). Yes, all in all it is expensive but so worth it! It is manageable to do everything within one day and I had the best time with Sura. Thank you again !

Two guides, but they barely spoke English, so there were almost no explanations. Apparently, no entry fees were included, so the cost came to over $200 USD. This should at least be stated when booking. There also didn't seem to be a set itinerary: Dambulla was only included after I specifically asked for it, and there was no jeep safari. We reached Sigiriya Rock around midday, which was ultimately pointless. The crowds meant constant queuing and pushing (one hour for about 200 meters). I finally gave up the climb in frustration. A visit here only makes sense in the morning. Otherwise, the transport to Trinco was quick and safe. The spice garden was also very interesting. You could sample the natural products everywhere, and even a massage with homemade oils was included. Ultimately, though, the price/performance ratio didn't match. A shame…
