Full description
Ninety kilometres north of Kandy in a tuk-tuk takes about three hours, which is an hour longer than a car and considerably more interesting. The road runs through Matale and the spice country, and open-sided at forty kilometres an hour you see the villages rather than pass them.
Dambulla is the first stop: five caves cut under a rock overhang, painted floor to ceiling, holding around 150 Buddha images and mural work going back to the first century BC. It is cool inside, which matters, and the approach path up the rock is steeper than people expect.
Sigiriya is the climb — 1,200 steps up a 200-metre granite plug that King Kashyapa fortified in the fifth century and turned into a palace. The frescoes of the mirror wall are halfway up, sheltered in a pocket of the rock face; the lion's paws are near the top; and the summit is the footprint of a royal citadel with a view over the whole plain.
The village stops are what the private tuk-tuk buys you: a paddy field, a lunch place your driver eats at, a stop wherever something is happening. Nothing on that list is scheduled, and that is the point.
