Full description

Sigiriya is 90 kilometres north of Kandy and most people do it in a van. Doing it by tuk-tuk takes longer and is a great deal more interesting: the road runs through Matale and the spice-growing country, and at tuk-tuk pace you actually see it.

The first stop is the Sri Muthumariamman temple in Matale, a Hindu temple with a gopuram covered in painted figures, unusual in a country where the Buddhist sites get all the attention. The spice garden that follows is a working plot rather than a shop — cinnamon, cardamom, pepper and vanilla growing where you can see the difference between them.

Then the rocks. Sigiriya is the fifth-century citadel on top of a 200-metre granite plug: 1,200 steps past the frescoes and the mirror wall to a royal palace footprint on the summit. Pidurangala, directly opposite, is the cheaper and rougher climb, ending in a scramble over boulders, and its view is of Sigiriya itself. Which one you do is decided with your driver, and doing both in one day is possible but hard.

Dambulla, on the way back, is five caves cut under an overhang and painted floor to ceiling, holding around 150 Buddha images. It is cool and dark, which by mid-afternoon is exactly what you want.
