Three UNESCO sites in thirteen hours is a serious undertaking and this trip is honest about being a long day. What justifies it is that Anuradhapura is genuinely different from the other two, and most visitors never get there.
Sigiriya opens the day at dawn — the citadel on the rock, the water gardens, the frescoes. Dambulla follows, five painted caves under an overhang, cool and dark after the climb.
Anuradhapura is the reason for the extra hours. It was the capital from the fourth century BC for over a thousand years, and it is spread across forty square kilometres of forest and tank country. The Ruwanwelisaya dagoba is 103 metres high and still whitewashed and used. The Jetavanaramaya was, when built, the third tallest structure on earth after two of the Egyptian pyramids. And the Sri Maha Bodhi grew from a cutting of the tree the Buddha sat under, brought here in the third century BC — the oldest planted tree in the world with a written record, tended without a break for over two thousand years.
That last one is the difference between Anuradhapura and the other sites. Sigiriya is a ruin. Anuradhapura is a place people still come to pray.
