Full description
Three UNESCO sites in a day is an ambitious schedule and this trip does not pretend otherwise — it is twelve hours door to door and it starts before dawn. Done in that spirit it works, because the three sites are genuinely different from each other and none of them needs a full day on its own.
Sigiriya comes first, deliberately: 1,200 steps up a 200-metre granite plug to a fifth-century royal citadel, past the frescoes of the mirror wall. Climbing it at 7am rather than 11am is the difference between a good hour and a bad one, and it is the reason for the early start.
Dambulla is next, five caves cut under a rock overhang and painted floor to ceiling, holding around 150 Buddha images and some of the oldest surviving mural work in the country. It is cool and dark and takes about an hour.
Polonnaruwa closes the day. It was the island's capital in the eleventh and twelfth centuries and is far better preserved than Anuradhapura — the Royal Palace, the Vatadage, the Lankatilaka image house, and at the end the Gal Vihara, four colossal Buddhas cut from one granite face. That last one is, by a distance, the finest thing in the cultural triangle.
