Full description

Two rocks stand a kilometre apart in the plain north of Kandy and they offer opposite things. Sigiriya is the archaeology — water gardens, the mirror wall frescoes, the lion's paws, and a fifth-century palace footprint on the summit — and it costs around USD 30-35 to enter. Pidurangala is the viewpoint: a cheaper, rougher climb ending in a boulder scramble, and what you look at from the top is Sigiriya itself.

Which one you do is agreed with your driver on the day, and doing both is possible but hard in the heat. Photographers usually pick Pidurangala; anyone interested in the site itself picks Sigiriya.

The morning runs north through Matale, with a spice garden where cinnamon, cardamom and pepper grow together, and Dambulla's five painted caves are on the way back.

The safari closes the day: an afternoon jeep drive at Minneriya or a neighbouring park, when the elephants come down to the reservoir. Being driven all of it by tuk-tuk rather than van is the character of the day — slower, hotter, and a great deal closer to the country in between.

Tony we love you!!! The first tuktuk driver in two weeks who didn’t rush through traffic, we felt very safe :) That said, we highly recommend this tour on tuktuk with a guide because one would never get to see so many places in one day by oneself. Also Tony gave us very valuable information at every stop.

Absolutely amazing trip. Our drivers were Mesi and Toni and they really couldn’t do enough for us. Sigiriya is such a beautiful place and definitely a must when visiting Sri Lanka. We did the safari and they even let my son have a go at driving the tractor and cows. We had a local cookery lesson, saw elephants and climbed Piduranagala Rock. The views were amazing. This is a trip that we will definitely never forget. Thank-you Mesi and Toni for such an amazing experience.

Our Guide today was Masi and we had a very nice tour to Sigiriya and Dambulla. He took us to a herb garden, a batik shop, a wood shop, and a local buffet where we could try all the specialties from Sri Lanka. We visited a lot of Temples and he took us to the best view points. It was a wonderful day. Thank you Masi!

February for the clearest weather, or July-August, which is drier here than most people expect and covers the Esala Perahera. Unreserved 2nd/3rd class is sold on the day and always available — you will stand, which is where the open doorways and the famous photographs are. Sit on the right-hand side going south.
