How Mount Fuji Day Tours Are Routed: 5th Station, Kawaguchiko, Oshino Hakkai, Hakone, and What Each Combination Actually Delivers

Fuji Subaru line 5th station: the highest point reachable by road on the north face, at 2,305 metres, above the treeline with the summit close and the lakes below, and a shop-and-shrine complex that is busier than you expect. Kawaguchiko: the lake town, with the north shore view, the ropeway and the museums. Oshino Hakkai: the eight spring ponds in a thatched village. The Chureito pagoda at Arakurayama Sengen shrine: 398 steps to the pagoda-and-Fuji frame. Hakone: the volcanic valley to the south-east, with Owakudani, the lake cruise and the ropeway. Gotemba premium outlets: a shopping stop with Fuji in the car park, the padding in cheap coach itineraries. Almost every tour is three or four of these.

Coach tours, USD 80 to 150, run a fixed loop: typically 5th station, Kawaguchiko or Oshino, and either Hakone with a cruise or the outlets, with 45 minutes at each stop and a late-morning arrival at the mountain. They are efficient and cheap and they see Fuji at the hour it is most likely to be clouded. Private cars, USD 400 to 700 for up to six, leave Tokyo at 6:30 or 7:00, put the viewpoints first, skip the outlets, and stay flexible: if the mountain is out, they go to the lake; if it is not, they go to the caves or a soba lunch and try again at dusk. For two people the coach is the value; for four or more, the car costs the same per head and delivers a different day.

Fuji is clearest at dawn and clouds from late morning, so the order matters more than the stop list. The right day runs: pagoda or Oshino at 9:00, Kawaguchiko north shore by 10:30, then the 5th station (which is inside the cloud as often as below it, and where the shops and shrine work in any weather), lunch, and Hakone or a lakeside onsen in the afternoon. The Subaru line to the 5th station closes to all traffic in heavy snow, generally from December or January to March or April, so winter tours substitute the lakes and the pagoda. During the climbing season, roughly mid-July to early September, private cars are banned from the road and the tour vehicle or a shuttle bus is used, which adds an hour; from 2024 the 5th station gate also charges climbers a fee and caps daily numbers. Golden Week and the November maple weekends jam the Chuo expressway; tours leave earlier or run in reverse. Typhoons in September cancel the day outright.

You want the mountain in the frame: pagoda, Oshino, Kawaguchiko, in a private car, early. You want to stand on Fuji: any tour with the 5th station, accepting the cloud risk.
