Full description

This is a strictly seasonal tour: it runs only while Mt Yoshino is in bloom, roughly from late March to mid or late April, and the operator has published just two departures, on March 31 and April 2. There is no summer or autumn version of it. Yoshino's 30,000 cherry trees do not flower all at once either; they open in a staggered wave that climbs the mountainside through four historic groves, Shimo Senbon at the base, then Naka Senbon, Kami Senbon and finally Oku Senbon near the summit, which is why the exact date you travel changes which part of the mountain is at its peak.

The day starts in Osaka, not Nara. You meet at 8:45 a.m. at the ticket gates of Kintetsu Osaka-Abenobashi Station and take the train out to Yoshino, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape where the trees have been planted and replanted as religious offerings for well over a thousand years. Expect a real hike: the blossom trails are walked on foot and the mountain is steep in places. Along the way the group visits Kimpusenji Temple, the head temple of Shugendo mountain asceticism, with its entrance fee of JPY 1,600 covered in your price.

A traditional Japanese lunch is included partway through, followed by the viewpoint at Yoshimizu Shrine, known in Japanese as hitome senbon, the place where a thousand cherry blossoms are said to be visible at a single glance. The return to Osaka is aboard the Blue Symphony sightseeing train, whose deluxe supplement is included, arriving back at Osaka-Abenobashi at 17:22. Your guide works in English, Japanese and Spanish. Basic train tickets between Osaka and Yoshino, roughly eight US dollars each way, are not included and are paid on the day.

The Yoshino section is a genuine uphill hike on mountain paths and stone steps, not a stroll, so gauge your fitness honestly. Lunch and the Kimpusenji entrance are prepaid, but the basic Osaka-Yoshino train fare of around USD 8 each way is settled on the day. Because bloom timing shifts every year, the guide adjusts how far up the mountain the group climbs to reach the trees that are actually open.
