Nara Deer Park and Uji Tea Town: Full-Day Coach Trip from Osaka

A straightforward, good-value coach day out of central Osaka that pairs Nara's deer park with Uji, Japan's most famous green-tea town. Departure and return are both at the Harimaya Building in Nipponbashi, Chuo Ward, so this is an Osaka-based trip rather than a Nara one, with roughly seventy minutes on the bus each way. What you are paying for is the transport, the routing and a guided frame for the day, which makes it a sensible option if you would rather not work out train connections between two towns in one afternoon.

Nara Park gets the largest share of the day at about two hours. More than a thousand wild sika deer live here, protected since 1957 as a National Natural Treasure and regarded in Shinto tradition as messengers of the deity Takemikazuchi; packets of shika senbei crackers are sold at stalls throughout the park, and the deer will bow for them. The park also puts several of Nara's landmarks within walking distance, including Todai-ji with its fifteen-metre bronze Buddha dedicated in 752 CE, the five-storey pagoda of Kofuku-ji, and the lantern-lined approach to Kasuga Taisha, founded in 768 CE. Two hours is enough for the deer and one major site at a relaxed pace, not for all of them.

The second stop is Uji, about ninety minutes of sightseeing in the town that has grown Japan's most prized matcha since the medieval period and where Byodo-in, the phoenix hall pictured on the ten-yen coin, sits beside the river. The operator's listing also describes a soak at the Genji no Yu hot spring as part of the day. Including both bus legs the outing runs to roughly seven hours door to door. Visitors in the October to December rutting season should give the bucks extra room, as Nara city warns each year.
