Nara After Dark: Evening Temple and Deer Park Walk from Osaka

Nara empties out in the evening. Most visitors arrive as a half-day trip from Kyoto or Osaka and are gone by dinnertime, which leaves the temple precincts almost to themselves once the light goes. This walk uses that window. You can meet in Osaka at 6 p.m., at the Goto-chi souvenir shop by the East ticket gate on level B2 of Kintetsu Namba Station, and travel out with the guide, or join directly in Nara at 7 p.m. at the Monk Gyoki statue near Exit 2 of Kintetsu Nara Station. The operator schedules this tour during July, August and September, when the evenings stay warm and light enough to walk comfortably.

The route is a loop through the old capital's core. It crosses Nara Park, where around 1,465 wild deer settle for the night, passes the illuminated Nara National Museum and Todai-ji's South Gate, and reaches the entrance of the Great Buddha Hall and the temple bell tower. The hall itself is seen from outside after closing, not entered. From there the path climbs to the Nigatsudo observation deck, a wooden terrace on the hillside that looks out over the whole city, then descends past the Ukimido pavilion standing over its pond and the first great torii of Kasuga Taisha.

The last stretch takes in Kofuku-ji, whose grounds hold the celebrated five-storey pagoda, stopping at the South Octagonal Hall before finishing at Sarusawa Pond and Nara Station around 9:30 p.m. Nara has a long relationship with lantern light, and Kasuga Taisha's Mantoro festivals in early February and mid-August light thousands of them at once.
