Full description
Kyoto prefecture is not only the city. It runs north to the Sea of Japan coast, and that northern half — fishing ports, pine-covered sandbars, and a coastline of inlets — has almost nothing to do with the temples people come for. It is also almost entirely absent from foreign itineraries.
The centrepiece is a 45-minute ride on the sightseeing train from Nishi-Maizuru. It is a purpose-built observation carriage with sea-facing seats and oversized panoramic windows, and the line runs close enough to the shore in places that the water is directly below you. The Sea of Japan is a different sea from the Pacific side — darker, colder, with a heavier swell — and it looks it.
Around the train ride, the day covers the coast: the fishing harbours, the viewpoints, and the particular quiet of a part of Japan that is not managing crowds.
This is a long day — about eleven hours, leaving Nipponbashi Station in Osaka at 7:10 in the morning — because the distance is real. The coach is air-conditioned, and all tolls, parking and fuel are included along with the driver and guide, working in English and Chinese.
An upgraded option adds a cable car. Meals are not included, which is normal for this format and gives you the fishing-port seafood as a choice rather than a set menu.
Book this if you have already seen Kyoto and Nara and want something that no other visitor on your flight home will have done. Do not book it as your first day in Kansai.
