What Makes Jagalchi Different from a Typical Market
Jagalchi Market, on the shoreside road in Busan's Jung-gu district, is Korea's largest seafood market, solidifying its role in the local economy especially after the Korean War, when it became a central hub for the fish trade. Its vendors are traditionally and still predominantly women, locally known as 'Jagalchi ajumma' — a term of respect for middle-aged and married women that's become closely tied to the market's identity and history.
The ground-floor stalls hold both live seafood in tanks (octopus, crab, abalone, various fish) and dried goods, and the sheer density and noise of a working wholesale-adjacent market is part of the experience, not a drawback.
