Full description

Just 80km north of Bangkok, the ancient city of Ayutthaya was once one of the largest and most powerful cities in Asia — a thriving royal capital that dazzled foreign diplomats and traders from around the world. Today, its crumbling prangs, headless Buddha statues, and vast temple grounds are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most moving historical destinations in Southeast Asia.

On this guided day trip, a knowledgeable local guide leads you through four of Ayutthaya's most iconic sites:

Wat Phra Sri Sanphet — the heart of the ancient royal palace complex, with its three famous chedis standing tall against the sky. This was the holiest temple in the kingdom, used exclusively by the royal family.

Wat Mahathat — where you'll find the famous image of a Buddha head entwined in the roots of a Bodhi tree, one of the most photographed sights in Thailand.

Wat Ratchaburana — built by King Borom Rachathirat II to honour his brothers who died in an elephant duel; the prang here still contains original frescoes.

Wat Phra Ram — constructed on the cremation site of King Ramathibodi I, the founder of Ayutthaya.

Between temple visits, you'll stop for an authentic Thai buffet lunch at a local restaurant, giving you time to rest and savour the flavours of central Thailand. The guide provides historical context throughout, turning ruins into vivid stories.

Transportation is by air-conditioned van or mini coach, keeping you comfortable on the two-hour journey each way. The day ends with drop-off at MBK Mall in Bangkok, conveniently located near the BTS Skytrain.

Ayutthaya was absolutely stunning and the guide brought the ruins to life with incredible stories about the ancient Siamese kingdom. The Buddha head in the tree roots at Wat Mahathat is something you have to see in person. Thai lunch included was delicious and authentic.

What a day trip. Ayutthaya feels like stepping back in time. We visited four major temple ruins and each one was more impressive than the last. The guide explained the rivalry between Ayutthaya and Burma that led to the city's destruction. The included Thai lunch was a nice touch and very tasty.

Really enjoyed Ayutthaya but the drive from Bangkok is about 90 minutes each way. Once there though the temples are incredible, especially Wat Phra Si Sanphet with the three chedis. Guide was knowledgeable and the Thai lunch was good. Just be prepared for a long day.

Ayutthaya reminded me of Angkor Wat but less crowded. The temple ruins are breathtaking and our guide explained 400 years of history in a way that was easy to understand. Wat Chaiwatthanaram at the river was my favorite. The Thai lunch they arranged was one of our best meals in Thailand.

Did this as a family with two kids aged 8 and 11. They loved climbing around the ancient ruins and the guide kept them engaged with tales of kings and elephants. Wat Mahathat with the Buddha head in the banyan tree roots was their favorite. Lunch was kid-friendly too. Great family day out.

Good day trip to see the historical capital. The temples are impressive and the guide knew his stuff. Lunch was included which is convenient. My only feedback is that we visited five temples and it started to feel a bit repetitive by the last one. Four would have been perfect with more time at each.

Ayutthaya completely blew me away. I had no idea Thailand had ruins this spectacular. The guide was passionate about the history and you could tell he genuinely loves these temples. The Thai lunch at a riverside restaurant was the cherry on top. A must-do day trip from Bangkok.

Incredible day trip. The ancient temples of Ayutthaya are hauntingly beautiful. Our guide timed the visits perfectly so we avoided the big tour groups. The famous Buddha head in the tree roots was surreal to see in person. Thai lunch was authentic and filling. Highly recommend.

Lovely tour to Ayutthaya with a knowledgeable guide. The ruins are spectacular and well worth the trip from Bangkok. The included Thai lunch was simple but tasty. Giving 4 stars because the van was a bit cramped with 9 people but the experience itself was wonderful.

History buffs will love this. Ayutthaya was once one of the largest cities in the world and walking through the ruins you can feel that grandeur. Our guide painted vivid pictures of what the temples looked like in their prime. The Thai lunch was an unexpected highlight too.

This was the best day trip we did from Bangkok. The Ayutthaya ruins are UNESCO World Heritage for good reason. Wat Phra Si Sanphet and Wat Mahathat were jaw-dropping. Guide was excellent and the Thai lunch at a local restaurant was delicious. Worth the early start.

Superb tour. Ayutthaya is one of those places that photos don't do justice. Standing among 600-year-old temple ruins with our guide explaining the Siamese-Burmese wars was unforgettable. The Thai lunch included was great and the air-conditioned van was comfortable for the journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ayutthaya is located approximately 80 km north of Bangkok and the journey takes about 1.5 to 2 hours by air-conditioned van, depending on traffic. The route follows the main highway and is generally smooth. Morning departures between 7:00 and 8:00 AM avoid the worst Bangkok traffic. Ayutthaya is the closest major UNESCO World Heritage Site to Bangkok, making it ideal for a day trip. The ancient city was the capital of the Kingdom of Ayutthaya from 1351 to 1767 — over 400 years — before being destroyed by Burmese forces. It is one of the most important and moving historical destinations in Southeast Asia.
The tour covers four of Ayutthaya's most significant ancient temples: Wat Phra Sri Sanphet, the grandest royal temple of the old palace complex featuring three restored chedis containing the ashes of Ayutthayan kings; Wat Mahathat, where you see the iconic Buddha head entwined in the roots of a Bodhi tree — one of the most photographed images in Thailand; Wat Ratchaburana, built by King Borom Rachathirat II to honour his brothers who died in an elephant duel, with the original frescoes still visible inside the prang; and Wat Phra Ram, built on the cremation site of King Ramathibodi I, the founder of the Ayutthaya Kingdom.
Yes, an authentic Thai buffet lunch at a local restaurant near the historical park is included on standard options. The buffet features central Thai cuisine — dishes such as green and red curry, jasmine rice, stir-fried vegetables, grilled meats, soup, fresh fruit and Thai desserts. The restaurant is used by local tour operators specifically for its quality and air-conditioned comfort after a morning of outdoor temple walking. Note that the English Tour without Lunch and Entrance Ticket option (the cheapest option at $27.21) does not include lunch or entrance fees — these are paid separately on site at 80 baht per temple.
Four meeting-point options are available at different price points. The English Tour without Lunch and Entrance Ticket ($27.21) meets at River City Bangkok with start times of 7:30 AM, 9:00 AM or 12:00 PM — entrance fees and lunch are not included. The River City Bangkok Meeting Point ($37.10) meets at River City Bangkok with entrance fees and Thai lunch included. The Old Siam Plaza Meeting Point ($37.10) meets at The Old Siam Plaza, next to Starbucks, with everything included. The Samsen Meeting Point ($37.10) meets at Samsen Center Restaurant on Samsen Soi 2. All standard options drop off at MBK Mall near the BTS Skytrain at the end of the day.
All Ayutthaya temples require modest dress — shoulders and knees must be covered for both men and women. This applies to everyone without exception, including children. Bring a lightweight scarf or sarong to wrap around your shoulders or waist if needed — these can also provide some protection from the sun. Comfortable closed-toe walking shoes are highly recommended as the temple grounds involve walking on uneven stone, brick and grass surfaces. The sites are largely open-air and exposed, so bring sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses. The sun is intense year-round in Ayutthaya, and there is very limited shade between the ruins.
The tour involves moderate to significant walking across all four temple sites, covering approximately 4 to 6 km total over the day. The ground is uneven in places — ancient brick paving, grass, and stone steps are common. Temple stairs can be steep at some sites. The tour is not suitable for guests with serious mobility issues or those who cannot manage prolonged outdoor walking in heat. There are rest periods built in (lunch, vehicle transfers between temples) and the guide sets a comfortable pace. Most participants with average fitness complete the tour comfortably. Children aged 6 and above generally manage well with appropriate footwear.
Morning is significantly better. Ayutthaya is largely open-air and exposed, and by midday the heat and direct sunlight can be intense — particularly between March and May when temperatures reach 37 to 40 degrees. The morning light is also far better for photography of the ancient prangs, headless Buddha statues and crumbling brick walls. Starting between 7:30 and 9:00 AM means you experience the most atmospheric parts of the historical park before the day-tripping crowds arrive from Bangkok. The lunch break at midday provides a natural rest from the heat before any afternoon temple visits. Plan your Bangkok trip timing accordingly.
Yes. If you want to spend longer in Ayutthaya, you can return to Bangkok independently by train, minivan or bus. The Ayutthaya train station is a short tuk-tuk ride from the historical park and trains run frequently to Bangkok's Hua Lamphong and Bang Sue stations (journey time 1.5 hours, cost 20 to 100 baht). Minivans from Ayutthaya's minivan terminal at Chao Prom Market run to Victory Monument in Bangkok (1.5 to 2 hours, around 70 baht). This option suits guests who want to explore beyond the four main temples — Ayutthaya has over 30 ruined temples, floating markets, and boat tours worth extending a day for.
The Kingdom of Ayutthaya was one of Southeast Asia's most powerful and wealthy states, attracting diplomats, traders and missionaries from across Asia, Europe and Persia. At its peak in the 17th century, Ayutthaya was one of the largest cities in the world with over one million inhabitants. It maintained extensive trade relationships with China, Japan, Portugal, the Netherlands and France. The city fell in 1767 when Burmese forces breached its defences after a prolonged siege. The Burmese systematically destroyed the temples, melted down gold Buddhist statues, and burned the royal palace and archives. The destruction was so complete that much of Ayutthaya's history was permanently lost. Your guide brings these events to life throughout the tour.
