Full description

This half-day walking tour covers Bangkok's three most famous temples in one go — Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and Wat Arun.

You start at the Grand Palace, the former royal residence built in 1782. The architecture here mixes Thai, European, and Chinese styles in a way you won't see anywhere else. Inside the complex is Wat Phra Kaew, home to the Emerald Buddha — a small jade statue that's the most sacred in Thailand.

From there, a short walk takes you to Wat Pho. The 46-meter gold Reclining Buddha is the highlight, but the temple grounds are worth exploring too — 91 golden chedis, quiet courtyards, and the birthplace of Thai massage.

You then cross the Chao Phraya River by boat to reach Wat Arun on the other side. The porcelain-covered tower is stunning up close, and you can climb to the top for views over the river and city.

Your guide takes care of all tickets and logistics. Group size is capped at 10, so it stays personal. Tour wraps up around 1:30pm.

9:00 AM90 min

Grand Palace & Wat Phra Kaew

Begin at Thailand's most sacred royal complex. Explore the ornate Grand Palace grounds and visit Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha), home to Thailand's most revered religious statue. Your guide will walk you through centuries of royal history and explain the symbolic meaning behind the stunning architecture.

10:45 AM75 min

Wat Pho – Reclining Buddha Temple

A short walk brings you to Wat Pho, Bangkok's oldest and largest temple complex. The centrepiece is the magnificent Reclining Buddha — 46 meters long, 15 meters high, and draped in gold leaf. Explore the 91 chedis (stupas) dotting the grounds and learn about Wat Pho's historic role as Thailand's first public university and the birthplace of traditional Thai massage.

12:00 PM20 min

Chao Phraya River Crossing

Board a traditional wooden boat for a scenic crossing of the Chao Phraya River. This short ride offers beautiful views of the Bangkok skyline and lets you experience how locals have navigated the city's waterways for centuries.

12:20 PM70 min

Wat Arun – Temple of Dawn

On the west bank of the river stands Wat Arun, Bangkok's most photogenic temple. Its 87-meter central spire is encrusted with thousands of pieces of colorful Chinese porcelain, creating a dazzling mosaic effect. Climb the steep steps for sweeping panoramic views of the river and Bangkok skyline. Your guide will share the temple's history and its connection to King Taksin who once made it his royal temple.

Detailed Itinerary

Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew | 09:00 to 10:30

Meet outside Golden Place near the Grand Palace entrance. Your guide sorts out the tickets so you skip the main queue.

The Grand Palace complex is huge — built in 1782, it served as the royal residence for 150 years. Your guide walks you through the halls and explains the mix of Thai, European, and Chinese architectural styles.

Inside the complex is Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha). The statue is carved from a single block of jade and the king personally changes its robes three times a year. The murals on the surrounding walls stretch over 1km and tell the Ramakien epic.

Note: you need to cover your shoulders and knees. Sarongs available at the entrance.

Wat Pho and the Reclining Buddha | 10:45 to 12:00

A 5-minute walk from the Grand Palace brings you to Wat Pho, one of Bangkok's oldest temples dating back to the 16th century.

The Reclining Buddha is massive — 46 meters long, 15 meters high, completely covered in gold leaf. The feet are inlaid with 108 mother-of-pearl panels.

The grounds have 91 golden chedis, a beautiful ordination hall, and shaded courtyards where monks still study. This temple was actually Thailand's first university — they taught medicine, literature, and astrology here.

Chao Phraya River Crossing | 12:00 to 12:20

From Wat Pho, walk to a nearby pier and take a traditional wooden boat across the river. Short ride (5-10 minutes) but the views of Bangkok from the water are worth it.

Wat Arun, Temple of Dawn | 12:20 to 13:30

Wat Arun sits on the west bank and is probably the most photographed temple in Bangkok. The main tower is 87 meters tall, covered in millions of pieces of Chinese porcelain.

You can climb the steep steps to the upper terrace for 360-degree views over the river and the city. Your guide shares the story of King Taksin, who made this his royal temple when Thonburi was the capital.

Tour ends here around 1:30pm. You can take a boat back or explore on your own.

Very good. We did this first day and it helped us understand Thai culture for the rest of the trip. The murals at Wat Phra Kaew are unbelievable, our guide showed us details we never would of noticed. Only small group which was nice. The boat across to Wat Arun was a bonus I didnt expect.

BRING WATER AND SUNSCREEN. Theres basically no shade at the Grand Palace and we went at 10am in Feb and it was already boiling. Tour itself was really good though, Wat Pho was my fav. Taking one star off purely for the heat lol not the tours fault really

So we almost went to the Grand Palace on our own but last minute decided to book a guide and SO glad we did. Without someone explaining things you literally just walk through rooms of gold stuff and leave. He told us about the Ramakien murals and the history of each building. Entrance fees were all included which is nice because they add up (like 900 baht for all 3 temples if you buy seperately).

Grand Palace blew my mind the detail is unreal. Would of been nice to have more time at Wat Arun tho we only got like 40 min and it felt rushed. Wat Pho was the highlight for me personally, reclining buddha is HUGE.

Frequently Asked Questions

The tour runs approximately 4 to 5 hours, covering all three of Bangkok's most iconic temples in a single guided walk. You will spend about 90 minutes at the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, 75 minutes at Wat Pho (Reclining Buddha), and about 70 minutes at Wat Arun. The pace is comfortable and allows plenty of time for photos, questions and exploring each site thoroughly. Most tours begin at 9:00 AM, which helps you beat the worst of the midday heat.
Yes, all entrance fees are included in the tour price. This covers entry to the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew (normally 500 baht per person), Wat Pho (normally 300 baht), and Wat Arun (normally 100 baht). The traditional boat ride across the Chao Phraya River is also included. Having everything prepaid means you skip the ticket queues at each temple and walk straight in with your guide.
All three temples require modest dress. Shoulders and knees must be covered for both men and women. No tank tops, shorts, miniskirts, see-through clothing or open-toed sandals. If you arrive underdressed, sarongs and cover-ups are available to borrow at the Grand Palace entrance, but they can be uncomfortable in the heat. We recommend wearing lightweight, breathable clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. Long cotton pants or a maxi skirt with a t-shirt works perfectly. Comfortable closed-toe shoes are also recommended since you will be walking on stone and marble surfaces for several hours.
No, this tour does not include hotel pickup. You meet the guide at the Grand Palace main entrance, near the Tha Chang Pier. The meeting point is easy to reach by taxi, Grab, tuk-tuk, or the Chao Phraya Express Boat. If you are staying near the river or in the Khaosan Road area, you can walk there in about 15 minutes. The guide will send you a WhatsApp message with exact meeting instructions the day before the tour.
The best time is early morning, between 8:30 and 9:30 AM. The Grand Palace opens at 8:30 AM and the first hour is the least crowded. By 10:30 AM large tour bus groups start arriving and it gets significantly busier. Our tour is designed to start at 9:00 AM so you experience the Grand Palace during the cooler, quieter morning hours. If you are visiting between November and February (cool season), any morning time is pleasant. Between March and May (hot season), starting early is essential since temperatures can reach 35 to 38 degrees by midday.
Yes, children of all ages are welcome. Children under 120 cm tall get free entry to the Grand Palace. The walking distance is approximately 3 to 4 km total across all three temples, so children should be comfortable walking for a few hours with breaks in between. The boat ride across the river to Wat Arun is usually a highlight for younger visitors. Strollers are not practical at the temples due to steps and uneven surfaces. The guide adjusts the pace and commentary for families with children.
They are part of the same complex but serve different purposes. The Grand Palace is the former royal residence, a sprawling compound of throne halls, pavilions and government buildings built in 1782. Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha) sits within the Grand Palace grounds and is Thailand's most sacred Buddhist temple. It houses the Emerald Buddha, a 66 cm jade statue dressed in gold seasonal robes that only the King of Thailand is permitted to change. You visit both with the same entrance ticket. The Grand Palace showcases royal and political history, while Wat Phra Kaew is the spiritual heart of the nation.
You cross the Chao Phraya River by traditional wooden boat. The crossing takes about 5 to 10 minutes and departs from the pier near Wat Pho (Tha Tien Pier). The boat ride is included in the tour price. It is a scenic crossing with views of the river, the Bangkok skyline and riverside temples. The boats run frequently so there is usually no waiting. Wat Arun sits on the opposite (west) bank of the river. After visiting Wat Arun, you can take the same boat back or continue exploring the Thonburi side independently.
Yes, the steps at Wat Arun are quite steep and narrow. The main prang (spire) has steps at a roughly 45 degree angle leading to the upper terrace at about 30 metres high. There are handrails on both sides. The climb is optional and takes about 5 minutes each way. The reward is a panoramic 360 degree view over the Chao Phraya River, the Grand Palace across the water, and the Bangkok skyline. If you are uncomfortable with heights or steep stairs, you can skip the climb and still enjoy the beautiful mosaic work and grounds at the base level. Your guide will wait for you either way.
This tour is ideal for first-time visitors and is the most popular guided tour in Bangkok. The Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun are the three most important historical and cultural landmarks in the city. Visiting them with a knowledgeable local guide gives you essential context about Thai Buddhism, royal history and temple architecture that would be impossible to get on your own. Most visitors say it completely changed their understanding and appreciation of Bangkok. We recommend doing this tour on your first or second day to set the cultural foundation for the rest of your trip.
This is a small group tour with a maximum of 10 people. Most departures have between 4 and 8 guests. The small group size means you can actually hear the guide, ask questions freely, and move through the temples at a comfortable pace without getting lost in a crowd. It is a very different experience from the large bus tour groups of 30 to 40 people that you will see at the Grand Palace. The guide gives personalized attention and can adjust the pace and focus based on the group's interests.
We recommend bringing: comfortable walking shoes (you will walk 3 to 4 km on stone and marble surfaces), sunscreen and a hat (most of the Grand Palace grounds have no shade), a small bottle of water (bottled water is provided but extra is helpful in the heat), a camera or phone (photography is allowed everywhere except inside the Emerald Buddha hall), and a small amount of cash for any personal purchases. Leave large bags at your hotel if possible. Lockers are available at the Grand Palace entrance for a small fee if needed.
