  • Duck into low sea caves at the right tide
  • Round-trip air-conditioned hotel pickup included

Full description

Ao Thalane is the quiet counterweight to Krabi's busy island beaches. Instead of speedboat engines you get the dip of a paddle, the click of crabs in the mud and the rustle of leaves as macaques move along the branches overhead. Our guides know the tide tables intimately, so you set off when the water is at the right level to slip into the narrowest channels rather than staring at a mudflat.

The route threads between mangrove roots and out into an open bay ringed by limestone karsts that rise straight from the water. Along the way you nose into low sea caves and float inside a hidden lagoon that opens up behind a gap in the rock. Your guide points out mudskippers, monitor lizards, kingfishers and the crab-eating macaques that have made these forests home.

Kayaks are stable two-seaters and the paddling is gentle, so no experience is needed. Transfers, life jackets and dry bags are all arranged for you.

Detailed Itinerary

Pickup lands at your hotel around 08:00 and the drive north takes roughly 45 minutes, following the coast road past rubber plantations and the first of the limestone towers. At the Ao Thalane pier your guide fits life jackets, hands out dry bags and walks everyone through the two or three paddle strokes that make the day easy.

From about 09:05 you are on the water. The first hour stays inside the mangrove forest, where the channels narrow enough that branches brush the kayak and troops of macaques watch from the roots. Around 10:05 the forest opens into the bay and you cross to the cliff wall, ducking into shallow caves and threading through a rock gap into a quiet inner lagoon.

By 11:05 you are back at the pier for cut fruit and cold water, with the transfer returning you to your hotel by roughly 12:30.

Ao Thalane is the calmest water in Krabi and paddling into those mangrove channels with the cliffs overhead is completely different from the island tours. We went through a sea cave at low tide with about a metre of clearance. Our guide spotted mudskippers and crabs we would never have noticed.

No experience needed at all, the guide gives a five minute lesson and the water is flat. The hidden lagoon behind the rock wall was the highlight, you paddle through a gap and it opens into a silent pool. Four and a half hours was well paced with a snack break.

We saw macaques on the bank, a sea eagle and dozens of mudskippers. Our guide timed the route around the tide so we could get into the caves. Much better than I expected for a half day.

Really peaceful and the scenery is spectacular. It was hot with almost no shade in the open sections, so go for the early departure if you can. Sunscreen, hat and water are essential rather than optional.

Two people per kayak with the guide leading and never rushing anyone. My partner did most of the steering and I mostly took photos, which nobody minded. The limestone walls rising straight out of the water are extraordinary up close.

Booked this as a change from boat trips and it was the best decision of the week. Almost no other groups on the water at eight in the morning. Bring a dry bag, everything in the kayak gets damp.

The guide explained how the mangroves work as a nursery for fish, which made the paddle more interesting than just scenery. Transfers from Ao Nang were straightforward. Wear something you do not mind getting wet up to the knees at the launch.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Ao Thalane is a sheltered bay with flat, protected water and the guide gives a short paddling briefing before you set off. Kayaks are two-person sit-on-tops, so an easier passenger can let their partner do more of the work. Guides routinely tow anyone who tires.
The route threads through tidal mangrove channels, limestone canyons, sea caves and at least one hidden lagoon reached through a gap in the rock. Wildlife commonly includes mudskippers, fiddler crabs, macaques on the banks, kingfishers and sometimes a monitor lizard or sea eagle — but no sighting is guaranteed. Your guide will point out things you would otherwise paddle straight past.
Significantly. Sea caves and some narrow channels are only passable around low tide, while the shallow mangrove sections need enough water at high tide. Guides plan the day around the tide table, which is why departure times vary from day to day. If a specific cave matters to you, ask which departure suits it.
Yes, and it is one of the calmer options in Krabi for families. Children usually share a kayak with a parent and life jackets are provided in all sizes. Most operators set a minimum age of around four or five. Heat rather than difficulty is the main challenge.
Quick-drying clothes you do not mind getting wet to the knees at launch, sandals or water shoes with a heel strap, a hat, reef-safe sunscreen and a dry bag for anything electronic. Insect repellent helps in the mangroves. There is little shade in the open sections, so a long-sleeved rash top beats reapplying cream.
Hotel pickup and drop-off from Ao Nang, Krabi Town and Railay are usually included, along with drinking water and a light snack or fruit break. A full lunch is not standard on a 4.5-hour trip. Check your voucher for the pickup window, which is usually 30 to 45 minutes before the paddle.
Light rain does not stop it — the bay is sheltered and you are getting wet anyway — but trips are cancelled for thunderstorms or strong wind, normally with a refund or reschedule. The May to October monsoon brings more frequent afternoon squalls, so a morning departure is safer in that season.
