Full description
the local operator takes in elephants retired from logging and trekking camps and lets them live at their own pace. There is no riding, no chains and no performing; the only interaction on offer is the one the elephants genuinely enjoy, which is getting wet.
Your session starts with a short talk from the keepers about each animal, where it came from and how to read its body language. You then change into shelter clothing, help mix and carry the mud, and walk the herd down to the bathing pool. Scrubbing an elephant is messy, surprisingly hard work and completely delightful, and the elephants will happily spray you back.
Because groups are kept small and sessions short, the animals are not overhandled and you get real time with them rather than a queue for photographs. The keepers take pictures throughout and share them afterwards at no charge.

Detailed Itinerary
Arrive at the shelter for a 09:00 start and you are handed a set of shelter clothes and a locker key straight away, since nothing you wear will stay dry. The first twenty minutes are spent under the shade of the reception sala, where the keepers introduce each elephant by name and explain how it came to the shelter, along with the basic rules: approach from the front, never from behind, and let the animal come to you.
By about 09:35 you are walking the herd down to the mud pit. Coating an elephant is a two-handed job and the elephants lean into it, then everyone moves on to the pool for the wash, where buckets and brushes come out and the animals routinely soak their visitors.
Sessions finish around 10:15 with a rinse under the outdoor showers, a change of clothes and cold water and fruit while the keepers hand over the photographs.

No riding, no chains, no circus tricks, just washing two very content elephants in a muddy pool. The keepers have been with these animals for years and you can see the trust between them. My kids talked about it for the rest of the trip.
An hour and a half sounds short but by the end you are soaked, muddy and grinning. They explained where each elephant came from before we went anywhere near them. Wear clothes you do not care about because the splashing is enthusiastic.
What I appreciated most was that the elephants could walk away whenever they wanted, and one of them did. The staff never forced any interaction for a photo. Small group too, only eight of us in the session.
Genuinely ethical and well run, the keepers clearly care. It is fifty dollars for ninety minutes which is not cheap, and the actual bathing part is maybe thirty of those minutes. Still glad we did it rather than one of the riding places.
They gave us a briefing on how to approach from the side, never from behind, and how to read when an elephant has had enough. Standing in the pool throwing water over a three tonne animal that is clearly enjoying it is something else. Showers and lockers were clean.
Close to Krabi Town so the transfer was short, which left more time with the animals. There is mud, a lot of it, and it gets in everything. Bring a towel and flip flops you can hose off.
