The Core Difference: Crowds, Not Quality
Mutianyu and Badaling are more similar than most comparisons suggest — both are heavily restored, both have dramatic watchtower-studded ridgelines, both have cable cars, and both are a comparable distance and drive time from central Beijing, generally 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic and your starting point. The real difference is crowd management: Badaling is the section used for official state visits and is the default stop for large coach tours, which means on weekends and holidays it can feel more like a crowd-control exercise than a hike. Mutianyu absorbs visitors more comfortably because it has a longer walkable stretch (around 2.25 km open to the public, versus Badaling's shorter main section) and sees a lower volume of mass tour buses.
Neither is 'wild' Great Wall — if you want unrestored, overgrown sections, that's Jiankou, not either of these. Both Mutianyu and Badaling have gift shops, food stalls, paved approach paths and clearly marked routes.
