Description complète
Most visitors to Krabi never make it past the island beaches, which is exactly why Ao Thalane still feels like a local secret. This bay sits north of Ao Nang where a maze of mangrove waterways cuts between sheer limestone walls, and the only practical way in is by kayak. The water is sheltered year-round, so the paddling stays calm even when the open sea is choppy.
You spend roughly two hours on the water. Your guide leads you into narrow canyons where the cliffs close in on both sides and the sound drops away to almost nothing, then out through channels lined with mangrove roots where crab-eating macaques forage at the water's edge. Herons, mudskippers and the occasional monitor lizard fill in the rest of the cast.
The full outing runs four to five hours door to door once transfers are counted. Kayaks seat two, guides paddle alongside the group, and beginners are genuinely welcome; if you can sit in a boat you can do this trip.

Pickup from your hotel
Air-conditioned transfer from Ao Nang, Krabi Town or Klong Muang out to Ao Thalane.
Briefing at the pier
Life jackets on, dry bags issued and a short lesson on steering your two-seat kayak.
Canyon paddle
Follow your guide into the limestone canyons where cliffs rise on both sides of the waterway.
Mangrove loop and monkey spotting
Loop back through the mangrove channels, pausing where macaques gather on the exposed roots.
Return transfer
Rinse off, grab a cold drink and settle in for the drive back to your accommodation.
Programme détaillé
The minivan reaches your hotel around 08:30 and takes about 45 minutes to cover the road north to Ao Thalane. At the pier from roughly 09:15 your guide sorts life jackets, hands out dry bags and demonstrates the forward and turning strokes on dry land before anyone gets in.
Paddling starts near 09:30. The first hour heads into the canyons, where limestone walls narrow the channel to a few metres and swiftlets dart overhead. From about 10:30 the route loops back through open mangrove waterways, and this is where macaques usually appear on the exposed roots, close enough to photograph without disturbing them.
You are back on land by around 11:30, with time to rinse and change before the 11:45 transfer returns you to your hotel. Door to door the trip fills four to five hours depending on your pickup point.

We had an amazing morning kayaking with Imran our guide. We got to do a beautiful 8km loop with the high tide so recommend going in the morning. We saw lizards and monkeys and had so many photo opportunities which Imran made sure we got. Our driver also made a stop along the way for a famous viewpoint. Definitely recommend this activity !
Big shoutout to Imran and Deen. Deen picked us up at our hotel, showed us rubber tree in its rawest form, stop by a viewpoint to show us different island, and brought water for us. He was really passionate in showing us the beauty of Krabi. Imran, our kayaking guide, emphasised safety and ensured we had time for photo opportunities. It was a fun 2 hours with him!

Two hours of paddling is exactly right if you are not a keen kayaker. We went through the limestone canyon where the walls close in on both sides and the sound goes completely quiet. Wild macaques on the rocks watched us go past, close but not aggressive.
Cheap, easy and genuinely scenic. Hotel pickup and drop off in Ao Nang were included and ran on time. Our guide pointed out a monitor lizard swimming across the channel which was the moment of the trip.
Perfect half morning activity. Flat water, no wind, and the guide happily towed anyone who got tired. The monkey cove is real, there were maybe fifteen macaques along the shoreline.
Good tour for the money and the canyons are impressive. The actual paddling is only about two hours of the four, the rest is transfer time. Worth knowing before you book if you want a longer day on the water.
Do not feed the macaques, the guide said it twice and someone still tried. Aside from that it was calm, beautiful and easy going. Great for a first time in a kayak.
