Pas de balade à dos d'éléphant, pas de numéros, pas de crochets : ce sanctuaire dans la jungle en dehors de Pattaya existe pour offrir aux éléphants recueillis une retraite digne, et les visiteurs les côtoient aux conditions des animaux. En trois heures environ au camp, vous découvrez l'histoire de chaque éléphant auprès des soigneurs, vous leur donnez à la main bananes et canne à sucre, vous marchez à leurs côtés entre les arbres et, moment salissant et inoubliable, vous les rejoignez dans la fosse de boue avant de les rincer à l'eau.
Le sanctuaire appartient à la famille de camps Elephant Jungle Sanctuary, l'un des projets éthiques les plus connus de Thaïlande, et le modèle est constant : petits groupes de visiteurs, interaction sans précipitation, et des éléphants libres de s'éloigner quand ils en ont assez de vous. Les guides expliquent le passé des animaux, beaucoup venus de camps d'exploitation forestière ou de promenade, ainsi que la situation d'ensemble du bien-être des éléphants en Thaïlande, ce qui donne aux moments les plus attendrissants un vrai contexte.
Un repas thaï est servi au camp pendant votre visite, et des chemises traditionnelles de style karen sont fournies pour le nourrissage, à la fois pour les photos et parce que les éléphants en reconnaissent les couleurs. Programme détaillé
A morning pickup from your Pattaya hotel starts the day, with the drive out to the sanctuary taking around 40 minutes through increasingly green countryside. On arrival you're given a traditional Karen-style shirt to wear — the elephants associate the pattern with food and friends — and the guides introduce the herd, sharing where each elephant came from and how it ended up in the sanctuary's care.
The first hands-on session is feeding: baskets of bananas and sugarcane disappear fast into curious trunks, and the guides show you how to offer food safely. A gentle walk follows, moving with the elephants through the jungle as they graze and dust themselves. Then comes the mud pit — you'll wade in with them, help slap cooling mud onto their sides, and get thoroughly muddy yourself before everyone (elephants included) rinses off in the water. The visit closes with a Thai meal at the camp and time to change into dry clothes before the drive back, returning you to your hotel around midday.

What an incredible experience from start to finish! Visiting the elephant sanctuary was genuinely one of the highlights of our trip to Thailand. The elephants were absolutely beautiful, and it was wonderful to see how loved, respected and well cared for they are. The staff were fantastic — so friendly, knowledgeable and clearly passionate about the elephants. Especially Hannah! We learned so much about their personalities, backgrounds and how they are cared for, while being able to spend time with them in such a calm and respectful environment. Getting so close to these magnificent animals was something we will never forget. It felt very special and was an experience the whole family loved. If you’re visiting Thailand, I would 100% recommend this elephant sanctuary. A truly magical, once-in-a-lifetime experience and memories we will treasure forever. 🐘❤️
Magical few hours. No riding, no hooks, no performances — just feeding, walking and a very muddy bath alongside animals that are clearly well looked after. They give you a traditional shirt to wear which the elephants recognise. Unforgettable.
We chose the half day because we had other plans, and it was the right length — about three hours at the camp covers everything without anyone getting overtired, elephants included. The carers were knowledgeable and obviously fond of the herd.
Beautiful experience. Hand-feeding bananas and sugarcane while the caretaker told us each elephant's rescue story was moving. The mud bath is hilarious and messy — bring a full change of clothes and a towel. Thai meal at the camp was tasty.
Ethical, respectful and genuinely joyful. You can tell the difference immediately from the places that still offer rides. The elephants roam and interact on their own terms. Transport from Pattaya was included and comfortable.
Brilliant morning. Small group, so plenty of time with the animals rather than queuing for a photo. The walk through the trees beside them was the part I'll remember most. Well organised and safety-conscious throughout.
Wonderful experience, though it is on the pricier side for a half day. That said, the standard of care is high and that costs money, so I'd rather pay it here than support a cheaper place with worse practices. Loved it.
Very well run and deeply enjoyable. The staff spoke good English and explained the sanctuary's approach clearly. Feeding, walking, mud bath and rinsing off in the water — all in a beautiful jungle setting. Highly recommended.
One of the best things we did in Thailand. The elephants seemed relaxed and happy, which was the most important thing for us. Getting covered in mud with them was pure fun. Meal was simple and good, and the whole thing felt genuine.
