The Ayung against the Telaga Waja, what an ATV track around Payangan is really like, age and health limits, and how the combined days are structured.

Part 01

The two rivers

The Ayung runs below Payangan on the west side of Ubud and is the river most rafting days use: about twelve kilometres of class II to III water through a gorge with waterfalls coming in from the sides, two hours in the raft, nothing that frightens a beginner. The Telaga Waja in Karangasem, an hour and a half east, is narrower and steeper, class III to IV, with a weir drop near the end, and operators who want a livelier run use it.

Both rise fast after rain. In the wet season, November to March, the Ayung is quick and brown and the Telaga Waja can be closed for the day; in the dry season the Ayung is gentle enough for children of about seven and up. The guide reads the river on the morning and will not launch on a flood.

Part 02

What an ATV day is really like

The tracks are in the villages north of Ubud around Payangan, Tegallalang and Bongkasa: a loop of plantation lanes, a river bed, a section of village road, and a stretch of deep, red mud that is the part everyone remembers. Rides are 1.5 to 2 hours on the machine, on single or tandem quads with a guide in front and often a second at the back. Some tracks include a tunnel or a waterfall crossing.

You will be filthy. Operators lend boots and helmets and have showers at the end; wear clothes you do not mind ruining, leave watches and rings in the locker, and put your phone in the dry bag or the camera guide's hands. Contact lenses are better than glasses.

Part 03

Who should not

Rafting: anyone pregnant, anyone with a heart or back condition, and children under about seven on the Ayung; the operator's own limit is on the option. ATV: driving age is usually 16 or 18 depending on the operator, younger children ride as passengers with a parent or a guide, and pregnancy and back injuries rule it out. Both are outdoors for hours, so the very sunburnt and the badly hungover have worse days than they expected. Bali's heat matters less than it sounds; the river and the mud are cool.

Part 04

Combined days

The common package is ATV in the morning and rafting after lunch, from around 8:00 to 3:00, with lunch at the rafting base. It is a long day and the order matters: mud first, then the river rinses it off. Hotel pickup from Ubud is usually included and from the south is priced separately. A single activity is a half-day. For the gentler outdoor option, the Campuhan ridge walk costs nothing and takes an hour; for the volcano, see the Mount Batur guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.Which river is better for rafting near Ubud?

The Ayung for most people: class II-III, two hours, fine for beginners and children from about seven. The Telaga Waja in the east is class III-IV and better for a livelier run.

Q.How dirty do you get on a Bali ATV ride?

Completely. Most tracks include deep mud. Operators provide boots, helmets and showers; wear clothes you can throw away and bring a change.

Q.Can children do ATV in Ubud?

As passengers with a parent or guide, yes, from around five or six on most tracks. Driving age is usually 16 or 18 depending on the operator.

Q.Is rafting in Bali safe in the wet season?

Yes when it runs. Rivers rise after rain and operators cancel on a flood; a wet-season Ayung is faster and browner but still a class II-III river with guides in every raft.
