Part 01

What makes Tukad Cepung different

Most waterfalls are seen from the front. Tukad Cepung falls inside a cleft in the rock, and you stand at the bottom of a narrow canyon looking up at water coming over a rim with sky above it. When the sun is high enough to clear the canyon walls, its rays cut through the spray in visible beams, and that is the picture the place is known for.

The beams are real, but they are a two-hour event. Before ten the canyon is in shade; after noon the sun has moved past the gap. On an overcast day there are no beams at all, only a pretty fall in a green slot, which is still worth the walk but is not the photograph.

Timing it

Aim to be at the fall between 10:00 and 11:30 in the dry season, April to October. Tours from Ubud that put Tukad Cepung first, leaving at 8:30, get it right; tours that put it after Tegallalang and a coffee stop arrive at one and miss the light. Ask the operator what order the day runs in. If you are driving yourself, park at the top, allow ten minutes down and fifteen back up, and add time for the queue at the fall on a weekend, since everyone wants the same spot at the same hour.

Part 03

The walk

From the car park a path of stone steps drops into the gorge, then the route follows the stream bed upstream for a few minutes, wading through ankle-deep water and ducking under a rock ledge, before the canyon opens at the fall. It is easy for anyone who can manage steps, but it is wet from the knee down, the rocks are slippery, and flip-flops are the wrong shoe; strap sandals or old trainers are right. After heavy rain the stream rises and the walk closes for the day; the operator will swap in another fall.

Part 04

Pairing it

Tukad Cepung sits in Bangli among a cluster of falls that are usually done as one day: Tibumana, fifteen minutes away, with a single clean curtain into a swimming pool; Kanto Lampo, where the water fans across a stepped rock face; and Goa Rang Reng, a smaller cascade on a rock slab. Penglipuran village, the traditional bamboo-roofed village, is twenty minutes north, and Kintamani's caldera viewpoint is forty minutes beyond that. A day of Tukad Cepung at ten, Tibumana for a swim, lunch in Bangli and Penglipuran in the afternoon is a full one.

The Ubud waterfalls guide ranks all of them by what they are good for.
