How Many Days in Ubud: Two, Three, or a Week, and What Each Gets You

Two nights in Ubud is enough for the essentials if you start early both days. Day one: Tegallalang before 8:30, Tirta Empul and Gunung Kawi, the Monkey Forest at four, dinner and a dance performance. Day two: a Bangli waterfall or two in the morning, a swing or the art villages, the Campuhan ridge at sunset. You will not have done Batur or east Bali, and you will not have sat still for an hour, but you will have seen why people come.

This is the right length for most people. It adds the Mount Batur sunrise, which takes a night's sleep out of the schedule and needs a slow day after it, and one of the big days out: east Bali for Lempuyang, Tirta Gangga and Sidemen, or north to Kintamani and Penglipuran. It also leaves room for one thing that is not a sight: a cooking class, a silver workshop, a morning at a spa, or an ATV and rafting day. Four nights lets you take the afternoons off, which in Ubud's heat is not a luxury.

A week only makes sense if you want Ubud as a base rather than a list. That means yoga or a retreat, several classes, a few days of doing very little in a villa with a rice-field view, and day trips that spread out rather than stack. It works well for the wet season, when an early start each morning gets the sights before the two o'clock rain and the afternoons are for the pool. It works badly if you are counting sights, because by day four you have seen them.

Most first visits split between Ubud and the coast. The usual shape is three nights here then three or four in Canggu or Uluwatu, with Nusa Penida as a day trip or one night from the south. Ubud first means the sunrise trek is done before the beach days; coast first means arriving in Ubud rested. Either order works and the transfer is 60 to 90 minutes.
