Full description
The Miho Museum is the reason to give up a day. I. M. Pei — the architect of the Louvre pyramid — designed it in the mountains of Shiga, and about eighty per cent of the structure is buried, so the building barely announces itself from outside. You reach it through a tunnel bored into the hillside and across a suspension bridge, an approach staged deliberately: Pei took his brief from the Peach Blossom Spring, the Chinese tale of a fisherman who follows a stream through a narrow cave and emerges into a hidden paradise. Walking it, the reference is unmistakable.
Inside is a collection of Egyptian, Persian, Greek, Roman, South Asian, Chinese and Japanese antiquities, lit largely by daylight through the glass roofs. Around two and a half hours here, including free time and lunch on your own.
Shirahige Shrine provides the other image of the day. Its vermilion torii stands in the shallows of Lake Biwa, Japan's largest lake, a few metres offshore — the same effect as Miyajima's famous gate, on a freshwater lake, with a fraction of the crowd.
One thing to check before booking: the Miho Museum closes for long stretches of the year, including all of January and February, most of June, and most of September. The operator does not run the tour on closure days, but you should confirm your date rather than assume.
Departures leave Osaka at 08:40 or Kyoto at 09:50, with hotel pickup available in Osaka as a paid option. Vehicle size is set by the final group. Admissions and meals are not included.
