Takayama and Shirakawa-go from Nagoya: The Gassho Farmhouses, the Old Town, and How to Do Both in One Day

Takayama and Shirakawa-go sit in the Hida mountains of Gifu, and Nagoya is the nearest gateway: the Hida limited express follows the Kiso and Hida river gorges north to Takayama in about two hours twenty, a journey that is a sight in itself, and Shirakawa-go is a fifty-minute bus beyond. Ogimachi village in Shirakawa-go is a valley of gassho-zukuri farmhouses, steep thatched roofs like praying hands built to shed the three metres of snow the valley gets, some 250 years old and several still lived in. The view everyone wants is from the Shiroyama viewpoint above the village, a fifteen-minute walk or a shuttle bus. Two or three houses open as museums (Wada house is the largest); the open-air museum across the river gathers houses saved from flooded valleys. Two hours is enough; a whole day is too long unless it is snowing, when it is the best-looking village in Japan.

Takayama's Sanmachi district is three streets of Edo-period merchant houses, sake breweries marked by cedar balls over the door, and miso and beef shops, best before 10:00 when the morning markets run along the Miyagawa river and at the Jinya, the only surviving provincial government house of the shogunate, which is the site to pay for. Hida beef is the lunch: skewers on the street, or a set at a counter for USD 25 to 40. The Yatai Kaikan shows the festival floats that parade in April and October.

By public transport: Hida express at about 7:40 from Nagoya, Takayama at 10:00, bus to Shirakawa-go at 10:50 (reserve the seat online, they sell out), village until 14:30, bus back, Takayama's old town from 15:30 to 17:30, express home at 17:40 or 18:40, Nagoya by 21:00. It works, but the old town gets its last two hours and the sun. Coach tours from Nagoya, USD 90 to 140, run a similar loop with the bus queues handled and about 90 minutes at each; private car tours cost USD 500 to 800 per group and can reverse the order to hit Shirakawa-go at 9:00, empty.

The honest advice is one night in Takayama: the morning markets, the old town before the day trippers, and the Hida beef dinner are the parts a day trip cuts. In winter the valley is under snow from late December to March, the Shirakawa-go light-up runs on a handful of January and February evenings for reservation holders only (parking and shuttle bookings open months ahead and go within days), and the Hida express runs through a white gorge; it is the season the tours are built for.
