Private Kyoto and Nara Day Loop by Van from Osaka

This is a private, vehicle-based day out that treats Kyoto and Nara as one loop rather than two separate trips. You start and finish in Osaka with your own guide and van, which is what makes the day workable at all: the six Kyoto stops are scattered across the north-west, south and east of the city, and the drive down to Nara adds roughly another 45 minutes on top. Because the group is only yours, the order and the time spent at each stop can be shifted on the day, and there is no waiting for strangers at the meeting point.

The Kyoto half moves from the Arashiyama bamboo groves to Kinkaku-ji, then to the vermilion torii tunnels of Fushimi Inari Taisha, the lanes of Gion, the food stalls of Nishiki Market and finally Kiyomizu-dera. The Nara half is shorter but heavier in history. Nara was Japan's first permanent capital, founded as Heijo-kyo in 710 CE and held that role for 74 years, and Todai-ji's Daibutsu, a bronze Buddha of about fifteen metres, was dedicated there in 752 CE. The hall that shelters it, rebuilt in 1709 at two-thirds the width of the original, is still among the largest wooden buildings anywhere.

Nara Park comes just before it, and the deer are the reason most people remember the afternoon. More than a thousand wild sika deer roam the park, protected for centuries as messengers of the Shinto deity Takemikazuchi and designated a National Natural Treasure in 1957. Vendors sell shika senbei crackers, and the deer know exactly what the wafers look like. Be aware that this is a genuinely full ten-hour day with a lot of walking and several long transfers between sites.
