George Town: The Heritage Core
George Town was jointly inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008 alongside Malacca, recognised for its unique multicultural trading-port architecture — rows of Chinese shophouses, Peranakan (Baba Nyonya) mansions, British colonial buildings, mosques, temples and clan houses standing side by side. Walking the heritage zone is the single best way to understand why Penang feels different from anywhere else in Malaysia.
The street art is the modern layer on top of the old one — Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic's 2012 murals (most famously "Kids on Bicycle" on Armenian Street) kicked off a wave of interactive wall art across the old town that's now a genuine draw in its own right.
The clan jetties, a row of Chinese stilt villages built out over the waterfront by different clan communities in the 19th century, are among the last of their kind still inhabited — Chew Jetty is the most visited and development-friendly of them.
