Siquijor's Folklore Reputation, and Why It's Not Just Marketing
Siquijor carries a genuine, long-standing reputation within the Philippines itself as a center of folk healing, herbal medicine and mysticism, dating back generations — local healers (mananambal) practicing traditional remedies and rituals are a real, living part of island culture, not an invention for tourists. This reputation shapes how Filipinos themselves talk about and visit the island, often with a mix of curiosity and genuine respect, distinct from how most beach-destination islands get marketed.
That said, the island's actual day-to-day character for a visitor is calm and unhurried rather than ominous — quiet roads, old Spanish-era churches, and a noticeably slower pace than Cebu or Bohol.
