Cruise Krabi's four islands on a two-deck power catamaran, swim in turquoise water and watch the sun set over the limestone with Thai snacks and drinks.

Highlights

  • Two-deck power catamaran with shade and open-air seating
  • Swim stop in the turquoise water between the islands
  • Sunset views over the Krabi limestone coastline
  • Thai snacks and drinks served on board
  • Compact four-hour trip that fits any itinerary

Full description

A power catamaran gives you something a longtail cannot: a stable, wide platform with a shaded lower deck and an open upper deck built for exactly the few hours either side of sunset. There is room to move around, somewhere to sit that isn't a bench, and no need to shout over an engine.

The route loops the four islands off Ao Nang, close enough to see the coastline in detail and with time anchored for a swim in the clear water between them. The crew serve Thai snacks and drinks throughout, and the upper deck is the obvious place to be as the light starts to change.

Sunset here works in the boat's favour. The limestone towers catch the last of the light while the sea flattens off, and from the top deck you get the full sweep of the coast rather than a view framed by a beach.

Detailed Itinerary

Check-in is at Ao Nang pier around 15:00, with a short briefing before the catamaran casts off. The first hour is spent cruising the four-island coastline, close enough in to pick out the caves and overhangs along the cliffs.

At about 16:30 the boat anchors for the swim stop. The water here is calm and clear, and snorkelling gear is available if you want it; the ladder off the back makes getting in and out easy even for less confident swimmers.

By quarter to six everyone is usually back on the upper deck with a drink, watching the sun drop behind the limestone. Snacks come out during this stretch. The catamaran turns back at about 18:45 and is alongside at Ao Nang shortly after, in good time for dinner ashore.

The catamaran is a completely different experience to a longtail, stable, quiet and with a huge shaded lower deck plus nets at the front. Four hours around Poda, Tup, Chicken and Phra Nang with one long swim stop. Thai snacks came round continuously and the drinks were included.

Watching the sun go down behind the karsts from the upper deck with a drink is the whole point and it delivered. Water was flat and the twin hulls mean almost no roll, which suited my wife who gets seasick. Crew of five for about thirty guests.

Swim stop was in genuinely turquoise water near Chicken Island and they put a ladder and a floating line out. Snacks were spring rolls, satay and fresh fruit, more substantial than I expected for a four-hour cruise. Well run and relaxed.

Beautiful boat and a lovely sunset, though at this price I expected a full dinner rather than snacks. Four hours goes quickly. The stability of the catamaran compared with the longtails was worth a lot to me.

Only one proper swim stop, so book this for the cruising and the sunset rather than for time in the water. The upper deck had beanbags and the music was kept low. Boarding from Nopparat Thara pier was straightforward.

We celebrated an anniversary on board and the crew brought out fruit with a candle without being asked twice. Sunset over Phra Nang with the cliffs in silhouette was the photo of our holiday. Toilets and a freshwater rinse on board.

Fast enough to cover all four islands in four hours without feeling rushed. Cold drinks kept coming and nobody was chasing tips. If you only do one evening thing in Krabi, this or the barbecue cruise.

Frequently Asked Questions

A catamaran has twin hulls, so it barely rolls — a real advantage if anyone in your party gets seasick. It also has two decks, shade, proper seating, toilets and a freshwater rinse, none of which you get on an open longtail. It's slower than a speedboat but far more comfortable.
This is a 4-hour cruise with Thai snacks and drinks included, not a full dinner — expect items like spring rolls, satay and fresh fruit served continuously. If you want a proper meal, plan dinner in Ao Nang afterwards or book an evening barbecue cruise instead.
There is usually one main swim stop in calm water near the islands, with a boarding ladder and a floating safety line out. This trip is weighted towards cruising and the sunset rather than extended snorkelling — book a full-day island trip if water time is your priority.
It cruises the four islands — Poda, Tup, Chicken and Phra Nang — timed so the sun sets behind the limestone karsts. You view several of them from the water rather than landing, which is what allows the whole loop in four hours.
Soft drinks, water and typically a selection of alcoholic drinks such as beer and basic cocktails are included in the ticket. Specific premium spirits or extra rounds beyond the included selection may be charged separately — check with the crew on board.
Yes — the stable deck, shade, seating and toilets make it one of the easier boat trips in Krabi for both. Children must be supervised near the bow nets. Boarding is from a pier rather than wading from a beach, which helps anyone with limited mobility.
The cruise runs in cloudy weather and a spectacular sunset can't be guaranteed — no refunds are given for cloud. Trips are only cancelled for unsafe conditions or port closure, in which case you're offered a reschedule or full refund.
