A catamaran rather than a longtail, which changes what the four islands feel like more than you would expect.
The power catamaran has two decks, real shade and open-air seating, and it does not pound through chop the way a speedboat does or soak everyone the way a longtail does when the sea picks up. For an evening cruise that matters: you are on board for four hours, most of it sitting, and the boat is the thing you actually spend the time on.
The route runs out around Poda, Chicken Island and the Thale Waek sandbar area, with a swim stop in the shallow turquoise water between them. Snorkelling equipment is on board for anyone who wants it, though at this hour the point is the swim more than the reef.
Sunset over the Krabi coastline is the reason the trip runs late. The limestone karsts hold colour for a long time after the sun has gone, turning from orange to a deep red-grey, and from the water you get the whole ridge line rather than a slice of it through a gap in the trees. Thai snacks and drinks are served as the light goes.
This is the version to book if you want the islands without a full day of getting in and out of boats, or if someone in the group is not confident on a small craft.

Detailed Itinerary
Check-in is at Ao Nang pier around 15:00, with a short briefing before the catamaran casts off. The first hour is spent cruising the four-island coastline, close enough in to pick out the caves and overhangs along the cliffs.
At about 16:30 the boat anchors for the swim stop. The water here is calm and clear, and snorkelling gear is available if you want it; the ladder off the back makes getting in and out easy even for less confident swimmers.
By quarter to six everyone is usually back on the upper deck with a drink, watching the sun drop behind the limestone. Snacks come out during this stretch. The catamaran turns back at about 18:45 and is alongside at Ao Nang shortly after, in good time for dinner ashore.

The reason we booked this trip was because we were a bit tired of loud and bumpy longtail boats / speedboats, and wanted some relaxing high-end experience on the sea. It was a bit expensive, but totally worth it! We had plenty of space on the boat (it is basically a large yacht), and could simply chill there and enjoy the sea. Everything was super clean, and the snacks were really good! We were also able to do some water activities and take some nice photos during the sunset. Also, the transfer to hotel was super comfortable! A van with AC, not a tuk-tuk :) The only thing - pad thai was quite cold and not really tasty, but since we only expected snacks and not a full meal, it was still fine!

The catamaran is a completely different experience to a longtail, stable, quiet and with a huge shaded lower deck plus nets at the front. Four hours around Poda, Tup, Chicken and Phra Nang with one long swim stop. Thai snacks came round continuously and the drinks were included.
Watching the sun go down behind the karsts from the upper deck with a drink is the whole point and it delivered. Water was flat and the twin hulls mean almost no roll, which suited my wife who gets seasick. Crew of five for about thirty guests.
Swim stop was in genuinely turquoise water near Chicken Island and they put a ladder and a floating line out. Snacks were spring rolls, satay and fresh fruit, more substantial than I expected for a four-hour cruise. Well run and relaxed.
Beautiful boat and a lovely sunset, though at this price I expected a full dinner rather than snacks. Four hours goes quickly. The stability of the catamaran compared with the longtails was worth a lot to me.
Only one proper swim stop, so book this for the cruising and the sunset rather than for time in the water. The upper deck had beanbags and the music was kept low. Boarding from Nopparat Thara pier was straightforward.
We celebrated an anniversary on board and the crew brought out fruit with a candle without being asked twice. Sunset over Phra Nang with the cliffs in silhouette was the photo of our holiday. Toilets and a freshwater rinse on board.
Fast enough to cover all four islands in four hours without feeling rushed. Cold drinks kept coming and nobody was chasing tips. If you only do one evening thing in Krabi, this or the barbecue cruise.
