An hour at the controls of your own quad through Khlong Son's forest tracks and hill trails, with sweeping views over Krabi's mountains and hotel pickup.

Highlights

  • One full hour riding your own quad bike
  • Forest and mountain trails in quiet Khlong Son
  • Wide views over Krabi's ridgelines and plantations
  • Route difficulty tailored to your group
  • Pickup available from Ao Nang and Klong Moung

Full description

Khlong Son sits in the folds of hills behind Krabi's coastline, a landscape of forest, plantation and dirt track that barely appears on the tourist map. It is quiet country, and the best way through it is on a quad bike where you set your own pace and stop whenever a view demands it.

After a briefing and a short warm-up on flat ground, you head out on a one-hour loop. The trail climbs steadily through forest cover, crosses open plantation with mountain ridges on the horizon, and drops through a couple of gullies that keep things interesting. Guides ride with the group throughout and adjust the route difficulty to the riders they have, so a family group and a set of thrill-seekers get quite different days out of the same trail.

Hotel pickup is available from Ao Nang and Klong Moung, making this an easy half-morning or late-afternoon addition to a beach holiday. Late-day departures catch the light at its best across the hills.

Detailed Itinerary

Afternoon departures pick up around 14:00 from Ao Nang and Klong Moung, and the drive inland to Khlong Son takes roughly half an hour along back roads lined with rubber trees. At camp from 14:30 you are fitted with a helmet, shown the controls and given a practice lap so nobody's first corner is a surprise.

The hour on trail starts near 14:50. It opens under forest canopy where the track is packed dirt and shade, then climbs into open plantation where the ridgelines stretch out to the north. Guides stop the group two or three times, both to regroup and because the viewpoints are worth the pause. Gullies and short technical descents break up the ride for anyone wanting a bit more.

By about 15:50 you are back at camp for a rinse and a cold drink, returning to your hotel by roughly 16:30 with the light going gold over the hills.

Khlong Son is greener and hillier than I expected and the trails run through proper forest rather than a fenced circuit. One quad each, and the guide let us open up on the wider sections. The viewpoint over the Krabi mountains was a real stop, not a two minute photo.

Hotel pickup from Ao Nang made it painless and the whole thing including transfers was under three hours. Briefing was thorough and they check your throttle control before letting you onto the trails. Muddy, bumpy and great.

Enjoyable ride and the scenery is worth it. Sixty two dollars for an hour of actual riding is on the expensive side compared to other quad operators in Krabi. The bikes were new and well maintained though, which may explain it.

Took visiting friends here and even as a local I had not been up these hill trails. The forest tracks after rain are slippery in a fun way and the guides know every rut. Good safety gear and they take it seriously.

An hour on the quad is short but it is a solid hour of riding, not queuing. Views over the mountains at the top were hazy but still lovely. They provide a rinse and you can leave your bag in a locker.

Frequently Asked Questions

Khlong Son sits in the green hills inland of Ao Nang, roughly 20 to 30 minutes by road from most Ao Nang hotels, and hotel pickup is included. The 1.5-hour listed duration covers the whole experience; the riding itself is about an hour. Allow around two and a half hours door to door.
It is a continuous hour on the trails rather than an hour of queueing, which is more riding than it sounds, and it includes a proper stop at the hill viewpoint. Beginners generally find an hour is enough before arm fatigue sets in. If you want more saddle time, look at the two-hour backcountry route instead.
Yes. There is a full briefing and a throttle-control check on flat ground before you go anywhere near a hill, and the guide leads at a pace set by the least confident rider. Forest tracks are bumpy and slippery after rain but the speeds are low. Say if you are nervous and they will put you behind the lead guide.
Helmet and goggles are included and compulsory, along with the quad, fuel, the guide and hotel transfers. Most operators have a rinse-down area and lockers for your bag. Gloves are usually available on request.
The hill stop gives sweeping views over Krabi's mountains and countryside, and the guide stops long enough for photos rather than a token pause. Clarity varies — haze is common in the hot season and cloud in the wet season — so the view is not guaranteed to be crisp. Mornings are usually clearer.
Clothes and shoes you do not mind destroying — you will be muddy or dusty either way — plus a full change of dry clothes for the ride back. Closed shoes are far better than flip-flops. A buff or scarf over your mouth helps a lot in the dry, dusty sections.
Most Krabi quad operators require solo riders to be at least 12 to 16 years old depending on the machine, with younger children permitted only as tandem passengers behind an adult or guide. Weight limits apply on some quads. Confirm the operator's exact policy at booking if you are travelling with kids.
