Charter an upgraded private longtail with cushioned seating and choose your own route through Hong Island, Chicken Island or the Phi Phi archipelago.

Highlights

  • Whole boat to yourselves with no other passengers
  • Choose Hong, Chicken or Phi Phi as your route
  • Cushioned seating, sun canopy and swim ladder
  • Picnic set out on a beach of your choosing
  • Skipper who dodges the day-tour fleet

Full description

This is the whole boat, yours alone, for either half a day or a full day on the Andaman. The longtail has been refitted with cushioned seating, a sun canopy and a proper swim ladder, so it keeps the character of the traditional Thai boat without the hard benches and shouting crowds of a shared trip.

Because nobody else is aboard, the route is a conversation rather than a schedule. Families often choose the calm lagoons of Hong Island; snorkellers head for the reefs around Chicken Island and Tup; those with a full day and clear weather can push out to Phi Phi. Your skipper knows which bays the day-tour fleet reaches at which hour and simply goes somewhere else.

A picnic is set out wherever you decide to stop, and there is no rush to be back aboard. It suits honeymooners, small groups of friends and anyone who has seen one crowded island tour too many.

Detailed Itinerary

Your driver arrives at the hotel around 08:30 and takes you straight to the pier, where the skipper is already loading ice, fruit and snorkel gear. The first half hour aboard is spent agreeing the plan: sheltered lagoons if the swell is up, open reef if the sea is glassy, Phi Phi if you have booked the full day and the forecast cooperates.

By mid-morning you are anchored somewhere quiet with the ladder down. There is no whistle, no group headcount and no fixed departure time from any stop. Around midday the picnic comes out on a beach the skipper picks for shade and privacy, and most groups linger there far longer than a scheduled tour would allow.

The afternoon drifts between lagoons, cliffs and swim stops before the boat turns for home in the late afternoon, usually reaching the pier around 16:30 with the light going gold behind the karsts.

Having the whole longtail to ourselves changed the trip completely. We told the captain we wanted Hong Island lagoon before anyone else and he had us inside the emerald basin at eight in the morning, alone. The cushioned seats also mean you are not sitting on a wooden plank for eight hours.

We booked this for our parents and it was the right call. No fixed schedule, no waiting for thirty strangers, and we swapped Chicken Island for extra time at Hong when they were enjoying the beach. The captain shifted the awning around all day so nobody got burned.

Eight hours felt generous rather than long. We did Hong lagoon, the viewpoint climb and then a lazy afternoon at Paradise Beach on Phi Phi side. Expensive per boat but split between five of us it worked out fine.

The freedom is the product here. We stopped twice just because the water looked good, which no group boat would ever do. Bring cash for the national park fees, they are not part of the charter price.

Beautiful day and our captain was patient and kind with our kids. The sea got choppy on the way back in the afternoon and a longtail bounces more than a speedboat, so my daughter felt unwell. Worth asking to head home a little earlier if the wind picks up.

Frequently Asked Questions

You get an entire upgraded longtail with cushioned seating, a captain and a guide reserved for your group only for eight hours, plus snorkelling gear, drinking water, fruit and towels on most operators. There is no fixed itinerary — you agree the route on the day. Food arrangements vary, so confirm whether lunch is packed, bought on the beach, or your own responsibility.
Yes, that is the point of the charter. Most groups pick either Hong Island and its lagoon, the four islands including Chicken and Phra Nang, or a run out towards the Phi Phi archipelago — and you can swap stops mid-day if the weather or the mood changes. Phi Phi is a long run in a longtail, so discuss timings with the captain before committing.
The price is per boat, not per person, so it is priced for the whole group — typically up to eight to ten passengers on a private longtail. That makes it excellent value for families or a group of friends and expensive for a couple. Confirm your exact group size when booking so the right boat is assigned.
Hong's enclosed lagoon fills with day-tour boats from mid-morning, so arriving around 8am usually means having it near-empty. A private charter is the only realistic way to be first in. Bear in mind the lagoon is only accessible at certain tide levels, so the captain may reorder the day around it.
Generally no. Hong Island sits inside Than Bok Khorani National Park and charges its own entry fee, currently around 300 THB per adult, paid in cash on arrival. Budget for park fees separately for every island you land on.
Longtails do not run in rough seas, so charters are cancelled or rescheduled by the captain on safety grounds, usually with a full refund or a date change. Krabi's monsoon season runs roughly May to October and afternoon squalls are common even on good days. Building flexibility into your dates is wise if you book in that window.
It is one of the better options for both, because there is no schedule pressure, no crowd and the crew can help people in and out of the boat. Cushioned seating and a shade awning make eight hours far more bearable than a standard longtail. Bring child-size life jackets to be safe — availability is not guaranteed.
