Full description

The classic Krabi day, done on a longtail rather than a speedboat, and timed around a sandbar that only exists for part of the day.

Thale Waek, the Separated Sea, is a strip of sand that emerges at low tide and joins Tup, Mor and Chicken islands into one walkable spit. At high tide it is simply gone. That is why this trip is scheduled by the tide table and not by a fixed departure time, and why a photograph of people standing in the middle of the sea is possible here at all.

Chicken Island is named for the rock formation at its tip, which reads as a chicken's head from the right angle and as nothing much from the wrong one. The snorkelling is on shallow coral just off the beach. Phra Nang has the cave shrine, where fishermen leave carved offerings to a spirit believed to protect them at sea, and it is one of the better beaches in Thailand independent of that. Tup and Poda are swimming and lying-down stops.

The longtail matters. It is slower than a speedboat, it is noisier, and it gets you into shallow water that speedboats have to anchor away from. Going with a local captain also means the route flexes with the sea rather than sticking to a schedule.

Detailed Itinerary

Transfers begin around 08:30 and the longtail leaves the pier once the group has boarded. The first anchorage is beside Chicken Island, where the water is shallow enough that even hesitant swimmers can see fish without going far from the boat.

Late morning is timed for the tide at Thale Waek, when the sandbar between the islands emerges and you can walk from one to the next. The crew watch the tide tables closely, so the exact hour of this stop shifts through the month.

Lunch is served on Poda at about 12:15, followed by a long, easy stretch of beach time. Mid-afternoon the boat moves to Phra Nang for the cave shrine and a final swim before turning back towards the mainland at around 15:15.
