The whole boat to yourselves, and a route you choose rather than one you join.

On a shared longtail you go where the schedule goes, you leave when the last person is back aboard, and you get twenty minutes at a beach you would have stayed at for an hour. Pick Hong, Chicken Island or Phi Phi, and change your mind on the water if the sea or the crowds suggest it, because the skipper is working for your group rather than a manifest.

The practical gains are bigger than they sound. You can arrive at a stop before or after the fleet rather than with it. You can leave a busy beach immediately instead of waiting out the scheduled hour. With small children, you can go home early without negotiating it with twenty strangers.

Your driver arrives at the hotel around 08:30 and takes you straight to the pier, where the skipper is already loading ice, fruit and snorkel gear. The first half hour aboard is spent agreeing the plan: sheltered lagoons if the swell is up, open reef if the sea is glassy, Phi Phi if you have booked the full day and the forecast cooperates.

By mid-morning you are anchored somewhere quiet with the ladder down. There is no whistle, no group headcount and no fixed departure time from any stop. Around midday the picnic comes out on a beach the skipper picks for shade and privacy, and most groups linger there far longer than a scheduled tour would allow.

The afternoon drifts between lagoons, cliffs and swim stops before the boat turns for home in the late afternoon, usually reaching the pier around 16:30 with the light going gold behind the karsts.
