Ablauf
The schedule below is a suggested plan and can be adjusted to suit your preferences.
Hotel Pickup & Drive to Kanchanaburi
Air-conditioned van picks you up from your Bangkok hotel. The drive to Kanchanaburi takes about 2.5 hours via the motorway.
Hellfire Pass Museum & Walking Trail
Visit the Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum and walk the actual cutting where POWs carved through rock with hand tools under torchlight. The museum features firsthand accounts, photographs, and original artefacts from the railway's construction.
Allied War Cemetery
Pay respects at the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, the final resting place of nearly 7,000 Allied prisoners of war. Rows of immaculately maintained headstones in a peaceful garden setting.
Thai Lunch
Enjoy a Thai lunch at a riverside restaurant in Kanchanaburi town, overlooking the River Kwai.
Death Railway Train Ride
Board the train for the most dramatic section of the original Death Railway. The ride crosses the Wampo Viaduct — a wooden trestle bridge built along a cliff face above the river. Stunning views and a powerful historical experience.
Bridge on the River Kwai
Walk across the famous Bridge on the River Kwai. Your guide shares the full history of the bridge, its bombing during the war, and its reconstruction. Great photo spot.

Detaillierter Ablauf
Hotel Pickup | 06:30
Pickup from your central Bangkok hotel in an air-conditioned minivan. The drive west to Kanchanaburi takes about 2.5 hours. Your guide uses the drive time to brief the group on the history of the Death Railway.
Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum & Trail | 09:00 to 10:15
The most powerful stop on the tour. The museum, built and maintained by the Australian government, tells the story of the railway through personal diaries, photographs, tools, and audio guides. After the museum, walk down into the actual Hellfire Pass cutting — a massive trench carved through solid rock by POWs using hand tools. The name comes from the torches that lit the night shifts, making the pass look like it was on fire. Walking through it, you can still see chisel marks in the rock.
Allied War Cemetery | 10:30 to 11:00
The Kanchanaburi War Cemetery contains 6,982 graves of Allied POWs who died during the railway construction. The cemetery is beautifully maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Each headstone has a name, rank, and age — many were in their early 20s. It's a quiet, sobering place.
Riverside Thai Lunch | 11:15 to 12:00
Lunch at a restaurant overlooking the River Kwai in Kanchanaburi town. Standard Thai dishes — pad thai, curries, rice, fresh fruit.
Death Railway Train Ride | 12:30 to 14:00
The highlight for many — boarding the actual railway and riding a section of the original track. The train moves slowly through the Kanchanaburi countryside before reaching the dramatic Wampo Viaduct, a curved wooden trestle bridge built along a cliff face. The views down to the river below are stunning. Your guide explains how POWs built this section under impossible conditions.
Bridge on the River Kwai | 14:30 to 15:00
Walk across the iconic steel bridge that inspired the famous film. The original wooden bridge was destroyed by Allied bombing in 1945; the current steel structure was rebuilt after the war. Your guide shares the full story. Good photo opportunities from the bridge and the riverbank.
Return to Bangkok | 15:30 to 18:00
Drive back to Bangkok with a hotel drop-off by early evening.

A deeply moving day. Hellfire Pass is haunting — walking the cutting the POWs dug by hand, with the museum putting it all in context, brought several of us to tears. Our guide handled the history with real respect and knowledge. The train ride along the River Kwai afterwards is beautiful. Not a light day out, but an important and unforgettable one.
As an Australian this was something I really wanted to do, and paying respects at the war cemetery was very emotional. The Hellfire Pass memorial was built by our government and it's beautifully done. Riding the actual Death Railway across the viaduct is something I'll never forget. Long day from Bangkok but absolutely worth it.
Very educational and well run. It is a 13-hour day with a lot of driving, so know what you're signing up for, but the guide kept it interesting throughout and the history is genuinely important. The Bridge on the River Kwai was busier than expected. Lunch was good. Overall a worthwhile, sobering tour.
One of the most meaningful tours I've done. The combination of the museum, the cemetery, the train and the bridge tells the whole story properly. Our guide was knowledgeable and respectful. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water — it's hot and there's a fair bit of walking. Highly recommend for anyone interested in WWII history.
Presented thoughtfully and respectfully, which I appreciated. The scenery on the train ride is lovely and the history is powerful. It's a very full day from Bangkok so I was tired by the end, but I'm glad I went. The guide answered all our questions patiently.
