Booking a tour guide for Fatehpur Sikri was the best decision. This ghost city is fascinating but without a guide you would miss so much context. Our guide explained how Emperor Akbar built this entire capital city after the Sufi saint Salim Chishti predicted the birth of his son. The Buland Darwaza is the tallest gateway in the world at 54 meters and walking through it was awe-inspiring. Jodha Bai's palace showed the Hindu-Muslim architectural fusion beautifully. Much more interesting than the Taj in some ways.
Fatehpur Sikri is an underrated gem and having a guide made all the difference. The abandoned Mughal capital has palaces, mosques, and courtyards that tell the story of Akbar's reign. The Panch Mahal with its 176 columns where the royal women would sit was architecturally amazing. The tomb of Salim Chishti with its marble lattice screens was beautiful. Only giving 4 stars because the site is very spread out and we were quite tired by the end in the heat. Bring lots of water.
Our guide at Fatehpur Sikri brought this ghost city to life. He showed us the Pachisi court where Akbar played chess with real people, the Diwan-i-Khas with its incredible central pillar, and the Birbal's House with its intricate carvings. The story of how Akbar abandoned this magnificent city after just 14 years because the water ran out is both tragic and facinating. The Buland Darwaza gate is massive and the view from the top of the steps is spectacular. Definately hire a guide here.
Fatehpur Sikri deserves much more attention than it gets. Our tour guide was excellent, he explained the layout of the entire palace complex and how it reflected Akbar's vision of religious harmony. The Ibadat Khana where Akbar held interfaith dialogues was a highlight. Jodha Bai's palace has Hindu elements like elephants and lotus flowers alongside Islamic geometric patterns. The tomb of Salim Chishti is completley covered in intricate marble lattice work. A must visit with a guide.
Hiring a guide for Fatehpur Sikri was essential. Without one you would just be walking through old buildings with no context. Our guide made us feel like we were there in the 16th century, describing court life under Akbar, the religious debates, and the drama of the royal harem. The Buland Darwaza is absolutley enormous, you feel tiny standing at its base. The whole site is remarkably well preserved for a 450-year-old abandoned city. Well worth the hour drive from Agra.
