Getting Up Namsan: Hiking vs. the Cable Car vs. a Bus
Namsan Mountain, at the heart of Seoul, is climbable for free via several well-marked hiking trails from different starting points around the city — the walk up takes most visitors 30-45 minutes at a moderate pace and is a genuinely pleasant forested route rather than a grueling climb. The Namsan Cable Car is the paid alternative, covering the steepest portion of the ascent in a few minutes for anyone who'd rather save the legs for later in the day. A city bus route also runs up to near the summit for those who want neither option.
Most visitors mix approaches — walk up one way for the experience, then take the cable car or a bus back down, or vice versa, rather than committing to the same route both directions.
