Leaving Kandy: The Routes Out, and Why the Drive Is the Day

This is the thing that costs people a day, and it is worth being blunt about.

In Sri Lanka a guided transfer means a private car with a driver-guide that leaves in the morning, stops at three or four genuine places along the route, and delivers you to your next hotel in the evening. You are buying the day, not the kilometres. A plain airport-style taxi does the same drive with nothing in it, for not much less.

On the Kandy routes the stops are the reason to go: Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, Ramboda Falls, a working tea factory, the Nanu Oya railway. Our transfer to Nuwara Eliya with a tea factory and Ramboda Falls and the Ella transfer via Peradeniya Gardens and Ramboda are both built this way.

Practical consequence: do not book early check-in at your next hotel. You will arrive in the evening, and that is correct.

The Kandy to Ella railway is one of the world's great train journeys and also seven hours of it, unreserved unless you book well ahead.

The answer most people actually want is to do the good stretch by rail and the rest by car. The scenic section runs from around Nanu Oya to Ella, not from Kandy, so the smart move is to drive the first half and pick the train up in tea country.

Kandy is the gateway to the ancient cities, and the drive north is short enough that the stops make the day rather than pad it.

Sigiriya and Dambulla are about three hours away. Doing them as a transfer rather than a day trip is the move if you are heading onward anyway, because you see the rock and end up in the right place instead of driving back to Kandy tired.

Leave at 7am, not 9am. Hill country roads are slow by design, full of bends and lorries, and every hour you start late is an hour of stops you lose at the other end.

Distance lies here more than anywhere. Kandy to Nuwara Eliya is about 80 km and takes three hours. Plan by time, never by the map.

Your luggage stays in the car. That is the real advantage over the train, and it is why the hybrid road-plus-rail options exist: you ride the scenic stretch with a day bag while the car meets you.

Name the exact hotel when you book. One-way pricing already includes the driver getting home; changing the drop point afterwards usually changes the fare.
