Alpine Forest, a Historic Railway and a Famous Sunrise
Alishan, a national scenic area in Taiwan's central mountains at roughly 2,200 meters elevation, is known for ancient cypress and cedar forest trails, cool mountain air that's a genuine relief from Taipei's lowland humidity, and the Alishan Forest Railway, a narrow-gauge line built originally for logging during the Japanese colonial era and now run as a scenic passenger service through switchbacks and forest. The area's most famous single experience is the sunrise viewing point at Zhushan, where visitors gather before dawn to watch the sun rise over a 'sea of clouds' settled in the valleys below — a genuinely spectacular sight on a clear morning, and one of Taiwan's most iconic mountain images.
