Taiwan's Largest Lake, Deep in the Central Mountains
Sun Moon Lake, in Nantou County in Taiwan's central mountains, is the island's largest natural lake and one of its most photographed landscapes — named for the contrasting round (sun) and crescent (moon) shapes of its two halves, split by Lalu Island near the center. The lake is surrounded by forested hills and several cultural sites tied to the local indigenous Thao people, including the lakeside village of Ita Thao, and the hillside Wenwu Temple and Xuanguang Temple, both popular boat-cruise stops.
The lake's main appeal is the combination of scenery and a slower pace than Taipei — a boat ride across calm water framed by mountains, rather than a single specific landmark to check off.
