What the EasyCard Actually Is and Why You Want One
The EasyCard is a rechargeable contactless smart card that covers the Taipei MRT, city buses, many convenience stores and fast-food chains, and bike-share docks across the city — functionally the same role Hong Kong's Octopus card or Japan's Suica play in their own transit systems. Tapping in and out at MRT turnstiles is faster than buying a single-journey paper ticket every ride, and EasyCard fares are discounted roughly 20% compared to paying with cash or paper tickets on the MRT, so it pays for itself quickly on anything beyond a single short visit.
It isn't strictly mandatory — paper tickets exist for every MRT journey — but given how often a multi-day visitor taps through a station or boards a bus, almost everyone recommends getting one on arrival rather than dealing with ticket machines repeatedly.
