A Former Gold-Mining Town, Now Taipei's Most Photographed Day Trip
Jiufen grew up as a gold-mining settlement in the Japanese colonial era, and its steep, narrow streets built into the hillside above the coast still reflect that layout today. The town's fame exploded internationally after visitors began drawing comparisons between its lantern-lit teahouses and alleys and the bathhouse town in Hayao Miyazaki's *Spirited Away* — the connection is more atmospheric resemblance than a confirmed direct inspiration, but it's strong enough that the comparison now drives a large share of Jiufen's visitor numbers, especially from fans specifically seeking that feeling.
The result is a genuinely beautiful, atmospheric old street that is also, by most visitor accounts, badly overcrowded on weekends and holidays — the narrow alleys weren't built for the current volume of foot traffic, and movement can slow to a shuffle at peak hours.
