A National Park Inside the City Limits
Yangmingshan National Park sits almost entirely within Taipei's own administrative boundary, yet its volcanic terrain — part of the Datun Volcano Group — makes it feel like an entirely different landscape from the dense urban core just down the mountain. Active geothermal features including fumaroles (steam and gas vents) and sulfur deposits are visible at several points in the park, most dramatically at Sulfur Valley (Liuhuang Valley), where hiking trails wind past steaming ground and mineral-stained rock.
The park's elevation and volcanic soil also support a genuinely different ecosystem from lowland Taipei — grassland, reed fields and seasonal flower displays that draw their own dedicated visitors separate from the hot-spring crowd.
