Taiwan's Legal and Social Standing
Taiwan became the first place in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage, in May 2019, following a 2017 constitutional court ruling and a subsequent legislative process. This legal milestone reflects a broader social position: Taiwan is widely regarded, including by LGBTQ+ advocacy organizations, as the most socially progressive country in Asia on LGBTQ+ issues, with anti-discrimination protections, visible public support, and a political mainstream that includes openly LGBTQ+ legislators. This doesn't mean every corner of Taiwanese society is uniformly accepting — older generations and more conservative families can hold more traditional views — but visitors, including same-sex couples, generally report Taipei as a comfortable, low-friction destination with little of the overt difficulty some other Asian capitals present.
