What the THSR Covers, and What It Doesn't
Taiwan's High Speed Rail (THSR) runs down the island's west coast, connecting Taipei to Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung at speeds up to 300 km/h, cutting a drive that could take 4-5 hours down to under 2 hours end to end. It's the fastest and most comfortable way to reach Taichung (for Sun Moon Lake and Alishan connections) or the southern cities from Taipei. What it doesn't cover is the east coast — Hualien and Taroko Gorge are reached by a separate conventional rail line (the TRA), not the THSR, since the mountainous eastern geography has made a high-speed line there impractical to build.
Stations sit outside some city centers (THSR Taichung, for instance, is separate from the conventional Taichung rail station, requiring a short transfer), which is worth factoring into connection times.
