A Pedestrianized District Built Around Youth Culture
Ximending, centered on a pedestrianized grid of streets around Ximen MRT station in Wanhua district, is Taipei's main youth-culture and street-fashion district — the closest local equivalent to Tokyo's Harajuku or Seoul's Myeongdong, though with its own distinct Taiwanese character rather than a copy of either. Street performers, buskers and small impromptu dance crews regularly set up in the open plazas, especially on weekend evenings, giving the area a genuinely lively, unscripted energy that's different from the more curated shopping streets elsewhere in the city.
The area's roots as a cinema and entertainment district go back to the Japanese colonial era, and several of its original theater buildings are still standing, now mixed in among newer fast-fashion stores and themed cafes.
