Step back in time with us on a full-day journey from Bangkok to Ayutthaya, the ancient capital of Siam and one of Thailand’s most fascinating UNESCO World Heritage Sites. On this small-group Discova experience, our expert English-speaking guide brings the stories of kings, temples, and lost kingdoms to life as we explore the legendary ruins of this historic city.
Leaving the bustle of Bangkok behind, we travel north toward Ayutthaya, once one of the largest and most prosperous cities in the world and the capital of the Siamese Kingdom for more than four centuries. Our first stop is the elegant Bang Pa-In Royal Summer Palace. As we walk through its peaceful gardens, discover how Siamese kings once spent their summers here, welcoming foreign guests and members of the royal court among graceful pavilions and tranquil lakes.
One of the first temple visits is Wat Yai Chai Mongkol, one of Ayutthaya’s most impressive temple complexes. Its towering bell-shaped stupa was built to celebrate a legendary royal victory in an elephant battle, while rows of saffron-robed Buddha statues line the temple grounds. At the rear of the complex, a large reclining Buddha rests peacefully among the temple ruins, adding another memorable highlight to this remarkable site.
After enjoying a traditional Thai lunch, the journey continues into the heart of the ancient Ayutthaya Kingdom on the historic city island. Here we explore some of the most impressive ruins of the former capital. One of the highlights is the temple home to one of Thailand’s most famous sights: the mysterious Buddha head entwined within the roots of a sacred Bodhi tree (Wat Mahathat). Nearby, you will also see the royal temple marked by three iconic chedis that once held the ashes of ancient kings (Wat Phra Sri Sanphet), along with the impressive former royal palace grounds that once stood at the center of the kingdom’s power.
In the afternoon, board a traditional river boat and cruise along the Chao Phraya River around the island. From the water you’ll see Ayutthaya from a different perspective, passing historic monasteries and the magnificent riverside temple of Wat Chaiwatthanaram before returning to Bangkok in the late afternoon.

Detailed Itinerary
Step back in time and uncover the rich history of Thailand on this immersive full-day journey from Bangkok to Ayutthaya, the ancient capital of Siam and one of the country’s most treasured UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Designed as a small-group experience, this tour offers a fascinating insight into Thailand’s royal legacy, magnificent temples, and centuries-old traditions. Accompanied by an expert English-speaking guide, you will travel through the stories of kings, warriors, monks, and merchants as you explore the remarkable ruins and cultural landmarks of one of Southeast Asia’s greatest historical cities.
Departing Bangkok in the morning, leave behind the modern skyline and bustling streets as you head north toward Ayutthaya. Founded in 1350, Ayutthaya flourished as the capital of the Siamese Kingdom for over 400 years and was once considered one of the largest and wealthiest cities in the world. At its peak, the city was a major trading hub connecting East and West, attracting merchants from Europe, China, Persia, and Japan.
Your first stop is the beautiful Bang Pa-In Royal Summer Palace, a stunning royal residence situated along the Chao Phraya River. Wander through its peaceful landscaped gardens and admire the unique blend of Thai, Chinese, and European architectural styles. Learn about the palace’s important role as a retreat for Siamese monarchs and discover how members of the royal family and foreign dignitaries were once welcomed to this elegant estate. The tranquil lakes, colorful pavilions, and well-preserved buildings provide a glimpse into Thailand’s royal heritage and make for excellent photo opportunities.
The journey then continues to Wat Yai Chai Mongkol, one of the most impressive and historically significant temples in Ayutthaya. Dominated by a towering bell-shaped chedi, the temple was built to commemorate King Naresuan’s celebrated victory in a legendary elephant battle. As you explore the grounds, admire rows of saffron-draped Buddha statues that create a peaceful and spiritual atmosphere. Hidden among the temple structures lies a magnificent reclining Buddha image, peacefully resting amidst the historic surroundings and offering one of the site’s most memorable highlights.
After a delicious traditional Thai lunch at a local restaurant, continue your exploration into the heart of the ancient capital on Ayutthaya’s historic city island. Here, the remnants of a once-powerful kingdom reveal the grandeur of Siam’s past. Visit Wat Mahathat, one of Ayutthaya’s most iconic temples, famous for the mysterious Buddha head entwined within the roots of a sacred Bodhi tree. This unique image has become one of Thailand’s most photographed and recognizable cultural landmarks.
Nearby, discover Wat Phra Sri Sanphet, the former royal temple of the Ayutthaya Kingdom. Its three striking chedis once enshrined the ashes of Siamese kings and remain a symbol of the city’s former glory. Explore the nearby royal palace grounds and imagine the grandeur of the kingdom’s administrative and ceremonial center, where rulers once governed one of Asia’s most influential empires.
In the afternoon, experience Ayutthaya from a different perspective as you board a traditional river boat for a relaxing cruise around the city island. Drift along the waters of the Chao Phraya River while taking in views of historic monasteries, riverside communities, and ancient ruins lining the riverbanks. One of the highlights is the majestic Wat Chaiwatthanaram, a beautifully preserved riverside temple inspired by Khmer architecture, whose impressive silhouette stands as a reminder of Ayutthaya’s cultural and artistic achievements.
As the day comes to an end, sit back and relax on the journey back to Bangkok, reflecting on a captivating day filled with history, culture, and unforgettable landmarks.
