From Bangkok: Death Railway, Bridge on River Kwai & Hellfire Pass Day Tour
Full description
This full-day tour takes you from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi Province for an unforgettable journey through one of World War II's most significant and sobering chapters — the Thailand-Burma Death Railway.
Built by Allied prisoners of war and Asian forced labourers under Japanese occupation, the railway cost an estimated 100,000 lives during construction. Today, sections of the original track remain and you can ride them.
Your day begins with hotel pickup in Bangkok and a 2.5-hour drive west to Kanchanaburi. The first stop is the Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum and walking trail, built by the Australian government. The museum tells the story of the railway's construction through firsthand accounts, photographs, and artefacts. The walking trail follows the actual cutting where prisoners carved through rock by hand — the name 'Hellfire Pass' comes from the eerie glow of torches as men worked through the night.
Next, visit the Allied War Cemetery (Kanchanaburi War Cemetery), the resting place of nearly 7,000 Allied POWs. It's a beautifully maintained and deeply moving site.
After a Thai lunch at a riverside restaurant, you'll ride a section of the original Death Railway itself. The train crosses the dramatic Wampo Viaduct, a wooden trestle bridge clinging to the cliff face above the river — one of the most photographed railway sections in Southeast Asia.
The final stop is the famous Bridge on the River Kwai. Walk across the bridge, learn its history from your guide, and take in the views. Return to Bangkok by early evening.

Detailed Itinerary
Hotel Pickup | 06:30
Pickup from your central Bangkok hotel in an air-conditioned minivan. The drive west to Kanchanaburi takes about 2.5 hours. Your guide uses the drive time to brief the group on the history of the Death Railway.
Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum & Trail | 09:00 to 10:15
The most powerful stop on the tour. The museum, built and maintained by the Australian government, tells the story of the railway through personal diaries, photographs, tools, and audio guides. After the museum, walk down into the actual Hellfire Pass cutting — a massive trench carved through solid rock by POWs using hand tools. The name comes from the torches that lit the night shifts, making the pass look like it was on fire. Walking through it, you can still see chisel marks in the rock.
Allied War Cemetery | 10:30 to 11:00
The Kanchanaburi War Cemetery contains 6,982 graves of Allied POWs who died during the railway construction. The cemetery is beautifully maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Each headstone has a name, rank, and age — many were in their early 20s. It's a quiet, sobering place.
Riverside Thai Lunch | 11:15 to 12:00
Lunch at a restaurant overlooking the River Kwai in Kanchanaburi town. Standard Thai dishes — pad thai, curries, rice, fresh fruit.
Death Railway Train Ride | 12:30 to 14:00
The highlight for many — boarding the actual railway and riding a section of the original track. The train moves slowly through the Kanchanaburi countryside before reaching the dramatic Wampo Viaduct, a curved wooden trestle bridge built along a cliff face. The views down to the river below are stunning. Your guide explains how POWs built this section under impossible conditions.
Bridge on the River Kwai | 14:30 to 15:00
Walk across the iconic steel bridge that inspired the famous film. The original wooden bridge was destroyed by Allied bombing in 1945; the current steel structure was rebuilt after the war. Your guide shares the full story. Good photo opportunities from the bridge and the riverbank.
