Full description

This 3-hour guided bike tour takes you through the Thonburi district on Bangkok's west bank — the quieter, older, more authentic side of the city that most visitors never see. On two wheels, you can access the narrow sois, canal paths, and temple lanes that are completely off-limits to tuk-tuks and tour buses.

The route winds through backstreets lined with traditional wooden shophouses, past community temples where monks collect alms in the early morning, along khlongs (canals) where longtail boats carry school kids and market vendors, and through local markets selling things that have nothing to do with tourism. This is daily Bangkok life, and you are riding through the middle of it.

Your guide (typically Dan or Filip — both long-term Bangkok residents with genuine knowledge of the neighbourhood) keeps the group small — a maximum of 8 riders — and moves at a relaxed pace with frequent stops for photos, stories, and street snacks. The route is flat and easy, designed for all fitness levels. Guests aged 8 to 75 complete it comfortably.

Highlights along the 15–18 km route include: traditional teak homes on canal stilts, ancient wats tucked between houses with almost no visitors, the sound of temple bells and monks chanting in the early morning, longtail boats weaving through narrow waterways, and a genuine local market where the only tourists are in your group.

The tour operates twice daily at 09:00 and 14:00. Bikes, helmets, water, and rain ponchos are all included. No experience necessary — just the ability to ride a bicycle independently.

Detailed Itinerary

The tour starts at the Candbike base near BTS Pho Nimit station in the Thonburi district. After the briefing and bike fitting, you head out into the neighbourhood immediately.

The first section takes you through Thonburi's quiet residential sois — narrow lanes where the buildings crowd close, locals hang laundry from upper windows, and motorbike taxis wait on corners. Your guide points out community shrines, explains the architecture of traditional Thai shophouses, and tells you which families have lived in these lanes for three or four generations.

As the route continues, you reach the khlong (canal) paths. These are the waterways that made Thonburi a city long before the roads did. Longtail boats pass at speed, monks cross in small wooden ferries, and canal-side communities go about their morning routines — cooking, bathing, repairing boats — with no particular interest in tourists on bicycles.

About halfway through, there is a stop at a local fresh market. This is not a tourist market. The vendors sell vegetables, fresh fish, grilled pork skewers, and ingredients for home cooking. You can browse, photograph, and pick up snacks. Your guide can translate and recommend.

The second half of the route moves toward the Chao Phraya riverside, where you get wide-open views of the river, the Grand Palace across the water, and Wat Arun's spire catching the morning or afternoon light. You ride along the riverside path past community temples and fishing spots before looping back to the Candbike base.

Total distance: 15–18 km. Total duration: 3 hours. Return to base by 12:00 (morning tour) or 17:00 (afternoon tour).

Best way to see the real Bangkok. We cycled through tiny alleyways and along canals that you'd never find on your own. Our guide pointed out local temples where monks were chanting and we stopped at a family-run noodle shop. The bikes were well-maintained and the pace was very manageable.

Such a unique perspective of Bangkok away from the tourist crowds. We rode through neighborhoods where kids waved at us and grandmas were cooking on the sidewalk. The canal sections were beautiful and peaceful. Guide knew every shortcut and kept the group safe in traffic.

Really enjoyed this tour but be prepared for the heat. We covered about 25km which was more than expected. The local life sections along the canals were fascinating and our guide shared stories about the communities. Bring lots of water and sunscreen. Would have liked a slightly shorter route.

Cycling through Bangkok's hidden neighborhoods was incredible. We visited a small temple where our guide explained the daily routines of the monks. The canal-side communities felt like a different world from the busy city center. Loved every minute of it.

My husband and I did this on our honeymoon and it was a highlight. The route takes you through parts of Bangkok that feel like countryside villages. We stopped at a gorgeous temple with nobody else around. The guide was knowledgeable about Thai Buddhist culture and local traditions.

Good tour for seeing a different side of Bangkok. The cycling was easy and the bike quality was decent. Temples and canal communities were the highlights. Only giving 4 stars because the start time of 7am felt early but I understand it's to avoid the midday heat.

I was nervous about cycling in Bangkok but the guide kept us on quiet back roads and canal paths the entire time. We saw local life that most tourists never experience. The flower market stop was beautiful and the temple visits felt authentic and unhurried.

Travelled solo and this was the perfect group activity. Met great people and our guide was super friendly. The route through the canal neighborhoods was eye-opening. We stopped at a local market where I tried fresh coconut water straight from the shell. Highly recommend.

Lovely way to spend a morning in Bangkok. The temples we visited were small and peaceful, nothing like the crowded tourist ones. Cycling along the canals was scenic and the local life was fascinating. Wish we had a bit more time at the last temple but overall great experience.

This tour shows you the Bangkok that guidebooks don't cover. Our guide took us through narrow lanes where locals were going about their daily life. The canal crossings on small ferries were fun and the temple stops were serene. Best activity we did in Bangkok.

Did this with my teenage daughter and we both loved it. The bikes had gears and were comfortable. Route was flat and easy. Seeing monks collecting alms in the morning and cycling past wooden houses on stilts along the canals was magical. Our guide was passionate and caring.

Excellent tour that combines exercise with culture. We visited three temples and rode along canals where you see the authentic side of Bangkok. The guide handled the group of 8 people very well and stopped frequently for photos and explanations. Would do it again without hesitation.

Frequently Asked Questions

The only requirement is the ability to ride a bicycle independently. The 15–18 km route is completely flat with no hills, designed for all fitness levels. Guests aged 8 to 75 complete it comfortably. You do not need to be a regular cyclist — if you can ride a bike, you can do this tour. The guide keeps a relaxed, unhurried pace with frequent stops for photos, stories and street snacks. There is no pressure to keep up or push through.
Maximum 8 riders per tour — this is strictly enforced. Candbike deliberately keeps groups small to ensure a genuinely personal experience rather than a large convoy. With 8 people maximum, the guide can stop at any point, answer questions individually, and take detours that interest the group. The small group also makes it possible to access narrow canal paths and temple lanes that a larger group would disrupt or block.
The $23 per person price includes a quality city bike with a sized-and-adjusted helmet, bottled water throughout the tour, a rain poncho if needed, and your English-speaking local guide. Child seats and small frames are available on request — notify Candbike of children's heights when booking. The tour does not include hotel pickup (self-make-way to BTS Pho Nimit), food and drinks at market stops, personal purchases, or optional gratuities for the guide.
Thonburi is Bangkok's west bank — the older, quieter, less-touristed side of the city across the Chao Phraya from the Grand Palace. Before Bangkok became the capital, Thonburi was briefly the capital of Thailand under King Taksin (1767–1782). Today it retains a slower pace: wooden shophouses, community temples, canal-side homes and local markets that haven't been developed for tourism. Most visitors never cross the river to explore it, which is exactly what makes this bike tour so different from the standard Bangkok experience.
Tours depart twice daily: 09:00 (morning) and 14:00 (afternoon). The morning tour is cooler and calmer — the canals are at their most atmospheric and the temples are quieter. The afternoon tour has slightly warmer temperatures but beautiful golden light, particularly along the Chao Phraya riverside towards the end of the route. Both tours run for 3 hours and return to the Candbike base (morning tour returns by 12:00, afternoon by 17:00). Tours operate rain or shine — rain ponchos are provided.
Meet at the Candbike base near BTS Pho Nimit station, Exit 4. After exiting, walk 50 metres and take the first left. The address is 373/2 Soi Somdet Phra Chao Tak Sin 8 (Soi Sae Sim), Khwaeng Bukkhalo, Khet Thonburi. Search 'Candbikebangkoktours' on Google Maps for the exact pin. Arrive at least 10 minutes before your start time for bike fitting and the safety briefing. Hotel pickup is not included — the BTS Skytrain (Silom Line) connects directly to Pho Nimit station.
Wear light, comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes or sandals with a back strap. A hat is recommended for the afternoon tour, and sunscreen is essential — much of the route is exposed. Bring a small bag or backpack as the bikes have no storage. Carry cash for optional market snacks and street food stops — the local market midway through the tour is cash-only and vendors speak no English. The guide can translate and recommend. No special cycling gear is needed.
Yes — guests aged 8 to 75 complete the tour comfortably. Child seats are available for small children who cannot ride independently; notify Candbike of children's heights in advance when booking. Small frames are also available. The flat, easy route is well-suited for families. The route through local neighbourhoods, canal paths and a market stop tends to engage children more than conventional museum or temple tours. The maximum 8-person group size means the guide can always keep track of the whole family.
A longtail boat tour shows you Bangkok's canals from the water — a beautiful perspective but one where you are a passenger looking in. The bike tour puts you inside the communities alongside the canals, riding through the same lanes as residents, stopping at their market, and reaching temple courtyards that no boat can access. You interact with the neighbourhood rather than observing it from a distance. The two experiences complement each other well if you have multiple days — see our Bangkok Canal Tour for the on-water perspective.
Tours are typically led by Dan or Filip, both long-term Bangkok residents with genuine knowledge of the Thonburi neighbourhood. They are not scripted guides reading from a fixed commentary — they know the families who have lived in these lanes for generations, which temples are worth stopping at (and which to pass), and where to find the best street snacks. The small group format means conversation flows naturally throughout the ride. Both guides speak fluent English and are happy to answer questions about Bangkok life beyond the standard tourist topics.
