Detailed Itinerary

Early Morning Departure from Delhi

Your unforgettable day begins early, with a private car picking you up from your hotel in Delhi or the NCR area at 6:00 AM. Settling into a comfortable, air-conditioned sedan, you will start your scenic 3.5-hour drive to Agra via the Yamuna Expressway. This modern highway offers smooth travel and peaceful views of the lush countryside dotted with green fields and small villages waking up to the new day. The tranquil morning light paints the landscape in soft colors, setting the tone for the remarkable experiences ahead. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and carry sunscreen, as you’ll be outdoors exploring some of India’s most iconic heritage sites.

Morning Visit to the Taj Mahal

Arriving in Agra just as the sun begins to warm the city, your first major stop is the Taj Mahal, the crown jewel of Mughal architecture and an enduring symbol of love. With skip-the-line entry arranged exclusively for you, you can avoid the crowds and enjoy this breathtaking monument at a quieter time of day. Your professional guide will share captivating stories about Shah Jahan’s vision, the intricate craftsmanship of the white marble, and the symbolism behind every detail from the delicate floral patterns to the perfectly symmetrical minarets. The soft morning light enhances the Taj’s ethereal beauty, making it an ideal moment for photography and reflection. As you stroll through the gardens and gaze at the Yamuna River beyond, you’ll feel the timeless magic of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Exploring the Agra Fort

Next, you will visit the imposing Agra Fort, just a short drive from the Taj Mahal. This massive red sandstone fortress was once the seat of the Mughal Empire and offers a fascinating glimpse into royal life. You’ll explore the grand palaces, elegant halls, and intricate courtyards while your guide explains the fort’s strategic importance and architectural innovations. Highlights include the Jahangir Palace, audience halls, and the stunning Musamman Burj balcony, where Shah Jahan was imprisoned, gazing longingly at the Taj Mahal. The fort’s elevated position provides panoramic views of the city, enriching your understanding of Agra’s historical and cultural significance.

Lunch and Afternoon at Fatehpur Sikri

Around midday, you will enjoy an authentic Mughlai lunch at a local restaurant in Agra, savoring rich flavors and traditional dishes that have been perfected through centuries of culinary heritage. After lunch, you will embark on a one-hour drive to Fatehpur Sikri, an abandoned Mughal city and another UNESCO World Heritage Site. This desert city, built by Emperor Akbar, is a marvel of Persian and Indian architectural fusion. As you explore landmarks like the majestic Buland Darwaza (Victory Gate), the grand Jama Masjid, and the royal palaces, your guide will bring to life the stories of Akbar’s reign and the city’s sudden decline due to water scarcity. Walking through the vast courtyards and intricate stone carvings, you’ll be transported back to the 16th century, experiencing the grandeur and mystery of this remarkable ghost city.

Evening Return to Delhi

By late afternoon, you will begin your comfortable drive back to Delhi, reflecting on a day filled with history, culture, and unforgettable sights. The journey takes approximately four hours, allowing you to relax and enjoy the changing scenery as dusk falls. You will be dropped off at your hotel in Delhi around 9:00 or 10:00 PM, concluding your enriching same-day private tour. This same day tour from Delhi covering the Taj Mahal and Fatehpur Sikri was absolutley packed with amazing sights. The private car picked us up at 5am from our Delhi hotel and we were at the Taj by 9:30. Fatehpur Sikri in the afternoon was a real surprise, the ghost city built by Akbar is incredibly well preserved. The Buland Darwaza gate is massive and the Panch Mahal is unlike anything else in India. Our driver was safe and experienced on the expressway.

Great day trip from Delhi to see both the Taj Mahal and Fatehpur Sikri. The Taj needs no introduction, it was as magnificent as you'd expect. But Fatehpur Sikri really surprised me, the abandoned Mughal capital has Jodha Bai's palace which shows the blend of Hindu and Muslim architecture. The Buland Darwaza is the tallest gateway in India apparently. Long day though, left Delhi at 6am and got back around 9pm. The private car made it managable.

Combining the Taj Mahal with Fatehpur Sikri on a day trip from Delhi was an excellent decision. At Fatehpur Sikri our guide explained how Emperor Akbar built this entire city after a Sufi saint predicted the birth of his son, but then abandoned it after only 14 years due to water shortage. The palace complex is stunning, especially the Diwan-i-Khas with its central pillar. The Taj Mahal was the perfect morning visit. Very well organised tour.

We had an amazing day visiting both the Taj Mahal and Fatehpur Sikri from Delhi. The private car was comfortable with good AC and the driver knew the best routes. At Fatehpur Sikri the guide showed us the Pachisi court where Akbar used to play chess using real people as pieces, which was facinating. Jodha Bai's palace had beautiful Hindu carvings showing Akbar's religious tolerance. The Tomb of Salim Chishti with its marble lattice screens was another highlight.

Solid tour covering two of the most important Mughal sites in one day from Delhi. The Taj Mahal was stunning as expected. Fatehpur Sikri doesnt get enough attention in my opinion, it was one of the most interesting historical sites we visited in India. The guide was good and the private car comfortable. Giving 4 stars because the lunch stop wasnt great and we could have spent more time at Fatehpur Sikri. But overall very good value.

Frequently Asked Questions

The drive from Delhi to Agra takes approximately 3 to 3.5 hours (200 km via the Yamuna Expressway). From Agra to Fatehpur Sikri is an additional 45 minutes to 1 hour (37 km via NH21). The total round-trip driving distance for the day is approximately 500 km: Delhi → Agra (200 km) → Fatehpur Sikri (37 km) → Delhi (237 km, returning via the expressway). Departure from Delhi is at 5:30–6:00 AM to maximise sightseeing time, with return to Delhi by 7:00–8:00 PM. All driving is in a private air-conditioned vehicle with an experienced driver.
Fatehpur Sikri is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — a magnificent Mughal city built by Emperor Akbar in 1571 as his new imperial capital. Constructed entirely from red sandstone, it represents the pinnacle of Mughal architectural innovation, blending Hindu, Islamic, and Jain design elements reflecting Akbar's famous religious tolerance. The city was abandoned after just 14 years (1585) due to acute water scarcity, which paradoxically preserved it in near-perfect condition — making it one of the best-preserved 16th-century cities in the world. It is often called India's ghost city and is considered by many architectural historians to be more architecturally interesting than the Taj Mahal itself.
The Buland Darwaza (Gate of Magnificence) is the main entrance to Fatehpur Sikri's Jama Masjid and is the tallest gateway in the world at 54 metres (177 feet). Built by Akbar in 1601 to commemorate his military victory in Gujarat, it is constructed from red and buff sandstone with marble decorations and inscriptions. Climbing the 42 steps to the gateway is one of the most dramatic architectural experiences in India — the sheer scale overwhelms visitors as they approach. Yes, the Buland Darwaza is a highlight of this tour. Your guide explains the inscriptions, including Akbar's famous words about the transience of the world carved above the entrance.
Emperor Akbar built Fatehpur Sikri as his imperial capital in 1571, choosing the location because a Sufi saint (Sheikh Salim Chishti) had correctly predicted the birth of Akbar's heir at this spot. After 14 years of occupation (1571–1585), the city was abandoned — the most widely accepted reason being chronic water shortage from the area's inadequate water table. Other theories include strategic military concerns and disease outbreaks. Today, the term 'ghost city' is apt: the palaces, courtyards, and administrative buildings stand intact but completely uninhabited, preserved in time. Walking through the empty halls with your guide narrating the vibrant court life that once filled them is a haunting experience.
Time allocation across the day: Taj Mahal — 2 to 2.5 hours (complete guided tour including interior mausoleum), Agra Fort — 1.5 hours (key highlights including Diwan-i-Am, Sheesh Mahal, and the Musamman Burj with its Taj view), and Fatehpur Sikri — 1.5 to 2 hours (Buland Darwaza, Jama Masjid, Panch Mahal, Diwan-i-Khas, and Sheikh Salim Chishti's tomb). Lunch takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour. Driving accounts for approximately 5 hours across the full day. The pace is structured but not rushed — each monument receives quality guided time.
Yes — a Ministry of Tourism-licensed professional guide accompanies you throughout the entire day, covering all three monuments: the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, and Fatehpur Sikri. Having one guide for all three sites is invaluable because the guide weaves a continuous Mughal narrative — the Taj Mahal (Shah Jahan's tribute to love), Agra Fort (the seat of Mughal power), and Fatehpur Sikri (Akbar's visionary capital) together span three generations of the same dynasty. The guide is certified for all three ASI-protected monuments. For a focused Fatehpur Sikri experience, see our dedicated Fatehpur Sikri Guided Tour.
Yes — a sit-down lunch at a quality restaurant is included, typically served between the Agra Fort visit and the drive to Fatehpur Sikri (approximately 1:00–2:00 PM). The restaurant serves North Indian, Mughlai, and continental cuisine with vegetarian, vegan, Jain, and halal options. Agra is famous for its Mughlai cuisine — dishes like petha (Agra's signature sweet), dal moth, and Mughlai biryani originated here. Bottled water is available in the vehicle throughout the day. Inform your guide of dietary requirements at booking so the restaurant can prepare accordingly.
The tour typically departs Fatehpur Sikri at approximately 4:00–4:30 PM and arrives back in Delhi by 7:00–8:00 PM depending on traffic conditions on the Yamuna Expressway. The return drive from Fatehpur Sikri to Delhi is approximately 237 km (3–3.5 hours). If you have an evening flight from Delhi, inform us at booking — the itinerary can be adjusted to ensure airport drop-off by a specific time. For late-evening flights (after 10:00 PM), the standard timing works comfortably. For earlier flights, the Fatehpur Sikri visit may be shortened or the lunch break adjusted.
All entry fees are included in the tour price. Individual ticket costs for foreign nationals: Taj Mahal — ₹1,300 (main complex) + ₹200 (inner mausoleum); Agra Fort — ₹650; Fatehpur Sikri — ₹610. The combined ticket value is approximately ₹2,760 per foreign national. Indian nationals pay significantly less (₹50, ₹35, and ₹40 respectively). Children under 15 enter all three ASI monuments for free. Your guide pre-purchases or purchases tickets on arrival at each site, handling all logistics so you avoid queues and proceed directly through the entry gates.
Absolutely — Fatehpur Sikri is one of India's most underrated UNESCO World Heritage Sites and is strongly recommended for anyone visiting Agra. While the Taj Mahal receives 7–8 million visitors annually, Fatehpur Sikri sees a fraction of that — meaning you explore a perfectly preserved Mughal city with far fewer crowds. The architecture is arguably more diverse and innovative than Agra Fort, and the 'ghost city' atmosphere is unlike anything else in India. Adding Fatehpur Sikri extends the day by approximately 3 hours (including driving and visit time) but enriches the experience exponentially. For a complete Agra sightseeing guide, see our resource page.
Wear comfortable, breathable cotton clothing and sturdy walking shoes that are easy to remove (shoes are removed at the Taj Mahal marble platform and at the mosque and tomb areas of Fatehpur Sikri). Modest dress is recommended — cover shoulders, avoid very short shorts. Bring sunscreen and a hat (the Taj Mahal marble terrace and Fatehpur Sikri's open courtyards have minimal shade). A light scarf is useful for women as a respectful head covering in mosque areas. The vehicle provides air-conditioned rest between sites. Carry a small daypack for essentials — large bags are restricted at the Taj Mahal security check.
Yes, the Taj Mahal is closed every Friday for religious reasons. Please ensure your tour date for the Taj Mahal does not fall on a Friday.
Yes, foreign tourists must show their original passport or a high-quality digital photo at the entrance gates for security identification and monument entry.
